Welcome back to another edition of Demanded Characters. Today we are wrapping up or month long look at the ladies of the DCU. This week we take a look at one of my personal favorite characters. While we have a version of her, there is one more version that needs to be made. Barbara Gordon’s days of crime fighting as Batgirl may be over, but her days as Oracle seem to be getting interesting.
Last week it looks like most people wanted to see the classic version of Maxima.
Starting out as a police commissioner’s niece, then adopted daughter, has already made Barbara Gordon an interesting character. Her role in the stories of the past made her a central figure in the DCU. By day she was an unassuming librarian, and by night her adventurous side came out as Batgirl. She was playful, exciting, and had the boy in the elf shoes’ attention like no one else. That fun life did not last long. A bullet from the gun of the Joker cut her free life short and confined her to a wheel chair for the rest of her life. This change took away the Batgirl persona, but left the cerebral side of her intact.
Once she got over the tragedy a new life started for her. She became the information hub of the DCU. She worked hard to build a new identity, one that instilled fear in some criminals and remained anonymous so no one knew who she was. Until recently no one could find or know who she was. She tries to maintain the ability to be self reliant: breaking up with Dick Grayson, staying out of the way of Ted Kord, and turning down other potential suitors. She has even faced off against the Joker in hand to hand combat, taking away something precious to him, his smile.
So the real question here is: would you buy an Oracle figure if she was made? And how do you want her made: box set, single, or exclusive?
