Make My Marvel! – Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu
Born out of the kung fu craze of the 1970’s, Shang-Chi is a master of the martial arts. He was the result of the combination of two television/movie licenses Marvel held at the time, Kung Fu and Fu Manchu, yet ended up not retaining much of either property —not that that was a bad thing.
Shang-Chi was the son of legendary crime lord Fu Manchu, extensively trained from an early age in the martial arts. His father intended him to eventually become his ultimate assassin, but, following his first assassination and the subsequent revelation that of his father’s true nature, Shang-Chi rebelled. He joined the British secret service and devoted his life to undermining his father’s criminal empire.
Keen-eyed readers will notice that I used the past-tense of the verb “was” earlier in regards to Shang-Chi’s parentage. That’s because Marvel let the rights lapse to Fu Manchu and now avoid specifically mentioning the character. Shang-Chi faded into obscurity at the start of the 80’s. Despite sparse guest appearances and several failed re-launches, the character hasn’t been radically-altered to make him “fresh” and “extreme” as is often want these days with obscure character re-vamps. He’s remained true to his creative roots, except, you know, without legally being able to acknowledge them. Makes total sense, right?
