Demanded Characters – Despero

Welcome back to another edition of Demanded Characters. This week we round out the big seven and their enemies. The final look at our Justice League is Despero, a worthy adversary for Martian Manhunter.

First, a quick update from last week; the first appearance Minerva Cheetah won the poll with 35% of the vote. The modern black leather Cheetah was a close second taking 30% of the pie.

On to this week’s topic of choice: Despero. Despero first appeared in 1960’s Justice League of America #1 and looked incredibly different from is modern, more monster-esque incarnation. The pink skinned bad guy from Kalanor left his home planet to come to Earth to challenge the Justice League. Despero knew that as long as the League existed he would never be able to take over the universe. After many confrontations the villain would escape from the League and returned to his home planet. There he would bathe in the Flame of Py’tar, changing his appearance and making him a more formidable enemy.

Despero would bulk up and attack the Justice League but once again he would be defeated. At one point, Despero was taken over by aliens and made more violent. Even with his improvements, time after time he would be defeated by the League. With the help of Johnny Sorrow, Despero would lead an attack on both the JLA and the JSA, but he was defeated, this time by the Green Lantern (using his own ally Sorrow to defeat him). Despero recently helped the villains to regain their memory after the JLA mind wiped them. He allowed them access to their memories for a time and attack the League at their weakest point: their secret identities.
