Welcome to what I hope will be the first of many installments of this new column. With all the excitement and the building up of the DC following on Fwoosh, it was time we had our voices heard about what we want to see in the line. After seeing what Mattel Has to offer there are plenty of more characters we want in the DC Classics line.
I think the number one figure on my list is the original Robin, Dick Grayson. The character started off being a way for kids to feel part of the story and has grown and changed over his almost 70 year history.
Though now known as Nightwing, Richard John Grayson was a boy when his parents were killed in a trapeze accident. This tragedy was witnessed by many but one member of the audience felt a feeling of deja vu watching a boy lose his family. Bruce Wayne felt it was his duty to help this young man and decided to take in the young Grayson. As time went on Dick found out that Bruce was the crime fighter know as the Batman and joined him as his sidekick Robin. For years the two fought the likes of the Joker, Penguin and the Riddler, and Robin even helped to start a team of sidekicks, Teen Titans. When Dick grew up he decided to venture off on his own becoming his own man and with some advice from Superman, he took on the name Nightwing.
Over the years we have seen Dick change the design of his costume and while DCD has given us great versions we want one in scale and with more articulation.
Here we have the 1970’s version with the huge collar and the almost Robin like face.
Moving into the 1980’s we have our more toned down version of the suit but it still stands out with yellow, wings, and “party in the rear” mullet.
Finally we come to the modern version which leaves out the yellow and goes for the darker look of our modern bat family.
We did get a Nightwing early on in the Mattel run with the Batman line and the new one with the bright blue boots but we want a new one done by our favorite designers the 4 Horsemen.
So here he is Mattel: our first Demanded Character.
