GTP Toys: Space Walls Updates from SLCC

I was able to briefly catch up with the GTP Toys crew at SLCC for some updates on their Space Walls projects, including accessories and future plans.

For those who don’t know, Space Walls are modular diorama pieces that happen to look like the interior walls of the Death Star from Star Wars. You can check out our reviews of both the 9-Piece Deluxe Set and the 2-Piece ACS Add-on Set. Basically, they are awesome and work with your 1:12 scale Star Wars figures perfectly.

First of all, we talked about costs. They realize that the walls can be a little expensive but with production costs overseas and other various expenses it’s hard to get the price down. That’s also what is delaying the Hanger Bay Doors.

Six pieces for the doors alone, then the frame and possible top pieces, it’s looking to be pretty expensive overall. There was even talk of a prefect world scenario of added motors to control the door. The possibility of a Kickstarter was mentioned because of the size and cost.

If you look to the bottom of the above pic, the 1:6 scale walls are still in the works.

Along with 3.75 “Classic Series” walls …

The smaller scale sets will also see the debut of the Support Beams. The 3.75 scale walls are due this fall along with a surprise 1:6 scale item.

One final scale we talked about was Lego minifigure scale. They are locking down the exact size there, still playing and tweaking.

As far as things we’ve seen that haven’t been released yet go, the lighting rigs for the translucent panels are up in the air because of cost. I was told that they may just release the 3D files for personal printing and rigging but they are still looking for options. The accessory sets with the boxes and barrels are scheduled for early next year.

You’ll also notice that the corner piece above is sitting at a 45-degree angle to the two other walls. The team came up with an angle piece that allows the walls to be set that way and may release the 3D files for those later.

The addition of clips instead of stickers to attach the walls together was a later decision because the original intention for the walls was just to be a background on the shelf, to stand straight behind the figures against the wall. Once they were released and crazy collectors started using them in pics in all kinds of ways the potential was realized and the clips came into play.

And then finally there is the addition of Blast Doors.

This piece is much cheaper to produce than the Hanger Bay doors due to it’s smaller size and lesser amount of engineering and pieces. It’s basically a frame with an octagonal hole and then the doors themselves are one removable piece. EDIT: GTP contacted me and said the Blast Door was originally scheduled for fall but because of a factory snafu it has been delayed.

So some cool stuff and great ideas from a couple of guys who love action figures and Star Wars. If you’re interested in some Space Walls of your own, be sure to visit GTP Toys for both the 9-piece deluxe set (more coming at the end of September) and the 2-piece add-on set. The 3.75 inch scale walls and beams will go up for pre-order Sept 30th, along with the 1:12 Blast Door and the surprise 1:6 scale item.
