Hasbro – Star Wars Black Series 6-inch Chewbacca

Hasbro Star Wars Black Series 6 inch Chewbacca Featured

The Star Wars Black Series has quickly become one of my new favorite lines. I love Star Wars. I love 6-inch action figures. I love nice sculpts. Oh, and I also love paint, but you just can’t get all that you ask for, so I let things slide a bit. And finally, I love not hunting constantly, so the slow schedule so far has been right up my alley, although the deluxe releases kind of snuck up on me. But I’ll be hogtied if I didn’t get up in a tizzy when I saw a Chewbacca on eBay, and I couldn’t go for my Paypal fast enough.

The packaging has been slightly redesigned to accommodate Chewy’s height. The window was extended up and over the packaging to keep from cramming the figure in there bent over or some other such nonsense. I can appreciate this. Less posing in-package means less chance of warping the limbs. And I love the change to blue; it just goes well with the black.

Chewbacca himself is a fantastic sculpt. The hair, the hands, the face, even the toes — this thing is packed with detail. And it all seems very natural. You know what I mean if you’ve messed with sculpted fur/hair covered figures before. The way one layer overlaps to the next doesn’t cause an eyesore. But it does hinder articulation a bit. All the wanted joints are there but they don’t get a lot of movement because of the various hair details. Check out my video review to get the full range of movements and articulation points.

The paint is passable. The dark parts don’t really transition well into the light parts. Like the upper torso and upper arms and legs, they are noticeably darker than the lower parts. I think I’ll just hit everything with a drybrush of the appropriate brown. The nose paint seems off to me, the pink on the front seem to come up too high, as does the black extending almost up to the brow. Another fix.

Besides paint, my big nitpick is the choice of an open mouth. The rest of the figures in the line so far have neutral faces, and I’m good with that. Then Chewy comes along and has a howling/laughing/wailing look and it throws me off, and that’s not even taking into account the fact that I’ve never been a big fan of open mouth yelling faces on my figures. Unless it’s Banshee. But not the one we got.

For an accessory, Chewbacca comes with his bowcaster. It is is not fully assembled in the package, but it’s easy enough to put together. The front cross part is the separate piece and pegs on to the front. What I accidentally found out is that the scope on top is also meant to come off, leaving you with a gun that is very reminiscent of the blaster that came with the original vintage Chewie back in the day. Nifty!

Best of all, he looks great alongside Han Solo. He may be slightly tall, but he’s supposed to and I gave up long ago on perfect scale within action figure lines. He’s taller than Han. I’m good.

So, really, if you’re into Star Wars and the Black Series 6-inch line, you’re going to want to get this. Sure, sure, articulation is hindered but he’s frakkin’ Chewbacca! You NEED him! I did.

  2. nice hasbro once again did another star wars character justice in the sw black line. not to mention he has to be one of the taller star wars black figures now.
