Alex Ross’ Justice Figures by McFarlane

Sun Nov 27, 2022 5:34 am

Something stopped me from buying the DCD Kingdom Come and Justice figs, prob because they really are more like statutes. Now I’m very glad I held off after that incredible Batman tease. What figs would you most like to see from Justice? It’s a less complex tale than KC but imo just as iconic.

Here’s my Justice top 5:

1. Brainiac
2. Armored Green Lantern/Lead
3. Parasite
4. Cheetah
5. Any of Gold/Mercury/Iron

I think there's a decent chance of SOME Justice figures, particularly if Todd is going to go even somewhat deep on Kingdom Come.

Superman and Wonder Woman are straightforward retools. Really, all Superman needs is a different sculpted chest emblem and paint job. Bizarro is easy to do from that. Justice Batman could likely be a further retool of Kingdom Come Superman. And KC Red Robin could share some digital sculpt with Justice Batman.

You could likely get a KC/Justice Captain Marvel from a lot of the same body. And a Black Adam from that.

Wonder Woman might be a bit trickier. Knowing Todd's WW preferences, I figure Todd's likelier to do KC Wonder Woman in her gold armor. IF Todd did the standard KC Wonder Woman, you could get a standard Justice Wonder Woman with an alternate crotch and boots.

Kingdom Come and Justice Aquaman could share parts,

KC Flash, Justice Flash, and Justice Green Lantern could share parts. Likewise Justice Black Manta. And John Stewart is essentially a head swap for Hal. Gold Label. And Lex Luthor's body suit look probably works using this base tooling. And KC/JSA Starman works on this body. And KC Captain Atom.

I could see Todd giving the armored looks their own sculpts. They seem up Todd's alley, especially because of how much Todd loves unpainted/monochromatic figures. Armored Batman's a bit involved but Batman sells and it's a 1966 Batmobile homage design. I've heard Batman 66 is Todd's favorite Batman.

Joker in the tuxedo is just iconic. KC Joker is essentially the same figure with an alternate head. Gold Label.

I could readily see Robin and Batgirl being considered here. It's a way to justify classic costumes that may not have a home elsewhere. Supergirl feels like a contender as well since the 70s hot pants look is popular with high end collectors (and under-done).

KC Red Arrow and Justice Green Arrow share a sculpt. Easy decision.

Red Tornado and Martian Manhunter could share a body except for the head and cape collar.

I have trouble seeing all the villains getting made.

But I think Brainiac WOULD be cool since he's based on Grant Morrison.

In terms of other unique sculpts, I can see KC Power Girl being the version that would sell her classic look at retail.

In terms of Megafigs, the obvious choices IMHO are KC Alloy, KC Hawkman, Justice Grundy, Justice Grodd.

The full lineup from the Justice comic is pretty extensive. And for the most part, pretty classic/iconic. Including a very recognizable LSH. Todd revisiting this DCD property would go a very long way to satisfying a lot of people.

I want the Big 7 and their LoD counterparts first.

I'm ALL for story-specific and artist specific figures. Alex Ross was never one of my favorites, but that KC Batman looks incredible. And I gotta have Magog as well as (obviously) Superman and Green Lantern. So I would be down for this. I would rather see COIE or "Death and Return of Superman" get dedicated figures/waves first though.

I have mixed feelings on Ross. I think he's gifted but the painted style is something I have to take in doses and I think his posing can feel stiff.

That said... Every sculpture I've seen of Ross' art looks fantastic. It's like his painterly style was made to be sculpted.

And Todd's articulation can combat the stiffness of the poses.

And his stuff looks great next to live action figures. I used Justice figures from DCD to supplement NECA's Reeve Superman and Keaton Batman to build a Justice League. And if you want a comics Superman to stand next to Cavill, Ross' Superman is perfect for that.

It reminds me in some ways of how Hasbro started going for realistic body types and face printing on its comic figures and how that makes them blend with movie figures in a collection.

And, as noted, it's a way to do 70s takes on characters that doesn't feel dated or overly retro.

It's probably the perfect way to do stuff like hotpants Supergirl, Dick Grayson Robin, etc. The silliness of the designs gets offset by the realism of the portrayal.

A big risk is that it CAN overtake the whole line. You could easily, EASILY get stuck devoting 5-7 waves just to finish the JLA and LoD.

But this is a case where I can see gold label and 2 packs (and maybe a Megafig or two for characters like Grundy and Hawkman) being used to cut down the amount of waves devoted to it so the line doesn't end up being taken over by it.

I really want that Batman variant based off of the 66 Batmobile. Glossy Black with red lines.
Always loved that DC Direct figure but couldn't cope with the statue nature of those figures. Great figure but no action.

Truthfully I’m more on board for Kingdom Come at this point.
