Toys you love based on properties you don't.

Thu Jul 29, 2021 10:01 pm

Like the title say, what are some toy lines you love based on properties you don't have any(or much) affinity with.

A few for me;

NECA TMNT Cartoon line. I was never a fan of the show, despite being 10 when it first aired and a definite cartoon lover. The figures however blow me away with their style and matte paint jobs, adds great color to the display.

Mezco Hellboy Comic Line. While I love Mignola's art these are based on, not to mention the fact that they nailed it, I just never got into the comics. Faves are Johann, Hellboy with floating vampire heads and still trying to track down a relatively cheap Abe figure from that line.

Jazwares Fortnite 6" Legends line. Never once played the game, with no desire whatsoever to, but the toy line is so fun with amazing designs. I mean you have giant banana Peely, then a robot version of Peely after he got blended into a smoothy, with his blended-up head, still in the blender! Doggo, The Brat, Kit, Beef Boss, Fishstick etc. Regular characters are well done as well and make great army builders, Wildcard, Skull Troopers, 8-Ball.

Don't enjoy Fortnite gameplay at all.

I think the skins and tie ins are brilliant.

I will be buying the Hasbro line since I can enjoy the art and characters on my terms.

Masters of the Universe and Fortnite come to mind immediately. Until Revelations I'd never seen an episode of MOTU, but I sure own a ton of the toys.

Same with Fortnite. I'll probably never, ever play that game, but some of those designs make great Morlocks for my Legends.

I don't think I spend very much at all on toys that aren't from properties I love.

I agree with Jazwares Fortnite 6". Those are excellent figures that I bought way too many of, and I have zero interest in Fortnite.

While I don't have many, I really like the little Glyos figures from Onell Design. I don't know if that counts as a property, but the toys do have some kind of backstory and stuff that I've never paid any attention to whatsoever.

And I really like the Captain Action figure from ZICA Toys, even though I don't care about Captain Action even the smallest bit. The figure is real hand-candy, though. Tons of fun to play around with, especially with all those hand options he comes with.

On the subject of ZICA Toys.. Sectaurs. Even going back to my childhood and the original toys. I loved them. And I really like ZICA's modern offerings for the brand. I've always liked them -as toys-. Fun to play with and I just dig the designs. But I have never in my life actually cared about the storyline or the property itself. Although I'll refrain from going deeper than that because I could probably spend a lot of time mining '80s toy brands that I liked as a kid, and probably still like today, that I don't care about -as a property- very much. And I think a lot of those old brands probably blur the line between what even counts as a legit 'property' and what only exists as a property to be a toy and therefore liking the toy is liking the property.

If I go back to the past and talk about figures I don't even own anymore; there were a lot of figures in LCBH that I really liked despite not being fans of the properties they came from - like Ripclaw, Pitt, and Monkeyman. I've also owned lots of Alien figures over my lifetime (Kenner and NECA) because they look cool and make cool toys, but I actually don't care for the Alien movies very much at all.

Just about any cool looking robot figure. I have tons of robots from properties that I care not a bit about, just because they were neat. I have a bunch of World War Robot dudes and some Tomorrow Kings figures because they were just super fun designs, but I found the property, as written by Wood, just... thoroughly uninteresting. A lot of 80s toys fit into that. KD mentioned Sectaurs; I know *nothing* about them, story-wise, but I *loved* them as a kid. Same for the Wheeled Warriors line. A bunch of weird plant car hybrids that you can swap out all their stuff because their frames are all modular? Awesome.

And definitely seconding/thirding/fourthing the Fortnite stuff. I like weird/fun designs, and the big banana guy cracks me up. I had him riding Ghost Rider's bike for a while, and it made me giggle every time I walked by.

This is an interesting topic because there are definitely figures I buy without any interest or affiliation with the source material

The most major example of this was with Masters of the Universe. I didn't own the toys as a kid. I didn't watch the Filmation cartoon with regularity and was unaware of the 200x series when it came out. I started buying MOTU Classics figures because they were sculpted by the 4 Horsemen and thought some of them could work as alien invaders for my DCUC displays. After buying a handful of figures I fell in love and started to learn about the property. Since then I have become an avid fan of MOTU - have watched the entire filmation series, the She-Ra series, 200x show, the Netflix She-Ra and Revelations. I became a fan of MOTU because of buying the figures first.

Currently I buy lots of figures by Storm Collectibles - especially Mortal Kombat, but also Street Fighter, Golden Axe and other games that I don't play and have never played. I buy the figures because they look good and mesh well with some of my displays.

Fortnite is another one where I've never played the game and never will but have enjoyed the 6 inch figures Jazzwares put out.

Great call-out on the WWR, and ThreeA. While the stories are trash bordering on low-rent porn, the designs and execution are amazing. My first foray into soft-goods as well, with the De Plumes and Fighting Jesus figures some of my favorites. I loved the black and white esthetic as well.

How about Acid Rain World?

Love the figures and vehicles and props. Don't care about their lore at all.

It's my personal sci fi world to maintain, like my dad and his trains.

Good call, if Acid rain was 1/12th I would be in trouble, great looking designs.

For personal worlds, I feel the same about Mythic Legions as well, appreciate what they are building but not interested in following the lore or factions.

I'm not really a Star Wars fan. I like a few movies, but overall Star Wars was never something I was really into.

But the DESIGNS for Star Wars I still think are great, and I wound up with a shelf of Stormtroopers, Mandolorians, Sith Lords, and cool Droids, despite never experiencing the films, games, or comics that half of them are from.

I don't know the first thing about Fortnite, but I pre-ordered the McFarlane half-skeleton Peely because it was just too ridiculous an idea not to.

I also have the new Revelations Moss Man on pre-order because I like his Swamp Thingy-ness. And I expect if they do a Panthor on the Battlecat mold I will probably buy that as well.

My collection would spiral out of control if I bought things from properties I wasn't attached to.

I do admire the Jazwares Fortnite figures from a distance. Otherwise the Golden Axe Skeletons are my best answer. I had never heard of Golden Axe before the figures were revealed.

Oh yeah. For sure. That's the OOooOOoOOonly way your collection WOULD spiral out of control. For sure. Since you never break that rule, you're definitely totally in complete control.

Hey, I've got a list. I never buy anything outside of it. Or almost never. Well, sometimes.
