my 2 Animated Spideys hit my POL and got them added to my shipment i just shipped yesterday. <3

glad to finally have that over with
You can do that? Do you just email BBTS?
yeah, just email their customer service. If it's not left the building they can cancel the shipment so you can then group it all together

Nice! I would have done that more than a few times. I always seem to get another item in stock just as I ship out my POL.

With Doc Ock, Scorpion, Rhino, and Shocker out we just need animated Mystero and Chameleon for a full Insidious Six.

we actually need a animated rhino and shocker too though....

- Shocker should be bright yellow, with dark brown unitard and lighter-reddish brown gloves, different belt

- Rhino should have less texture, maybe a little more blue in that grey, a different head, and a smoother body.

They put Shocker and Rhino on those retro animated cards - so I doubt they'll be doubling back to do more animation accurate versions of the characters. Especially not for Rhino which would require new tooling - there's just no way.

the animated cards have never ever mattered in identifying what is or isn't an animated figure. They clearly chose the card because it was the only nostalgic long running card spider-man even had in the 90s (after this line they were all short lived gimmicky action feature cards)

Plus there were figures in the line that were never on the show (like the alien spider-slayer) (and a few who received figures long before their character even appeared on the show (like octo-spider-man)

but that's all besides the point now.. considering they started a VHS line.. and it's quite possible we get an animated shocker at least through that... hopefully one day an actually accurate green goblin and hobgoblin too.

I think I get what you are saying -

originally they released Shocker looking like this in the regular line:

And then went to the retro card to release this:

But what you are asking for is essentially a repaint of the retro Shocker they did, painted to look more like this:

Is that right? I suppose if they thought they could leverage one of those VHS style box offerings to do a basic repaint, they might do that.

I just want animated figures to look like animated figures, in both sculpt and paint.

I don't think taking a comic design and putting it on a retro card = animated nor do i think repainting a comic figure in cartoon colors = animated.

Scorpion could have used a mutated head, but overall he and spidey are the only repaints that have actually worked.

Venom and Doc Ock are the best examples of what they should be doing... New sculpts, Cartoon accurate paint, etc.

Hobgoblin is the best example of what they SHOULD NOT be doing...

Unfortunately, I don't think Hasbro shares the same vision. The X-Men line was clearly more of a repaint line with minimal effort put into making the character's resemble their animated form. Only when it seemed that new tools could be produced to work in the mainline did it seem like much effort went into anything. I would be surprised if Hasbro views this line any differently, though they seem to be avoiding the cel-shading for the most part. If that means they're putting more into the tooling costs then I'm guessing a lot of folks here would take that trade-off. That said, they probably look at Shocker, in particular, as being both recent and close enough in style to not go back to the well for this line. If they felt otherwise then I think we would have seen him paired with the symbiote Spidey for obvious reasons.

I’m just hoping we at least get Vulture, Chamelon, and Smythe out of this line or via retro cards in animated colors like the upcoming Kraven figure.

I *GUESS* there are fans of cel-shading, but it seems ridiculous on a 3-D object when the original goal was to make a 2-D object appear 3-D.

I was going full completist on the carded figs, but after Wal-Mart Wal-Marted me with the cel-Spidey I was very happy to dump my carded Venom. They will do that on a card again without the shading because lots of people (me included) will buy it.

I'm hoping for an Ock, Vulture and Carnage on card - hell, I'd even buy Aunt May and Mary Jane - if they were accurate classic comic versions, not their animated iterations. But I assume they'll do any versions they can (except maybe the civilians) on cards just because people will buy them.

I am absolutely a fan of cel-shading when it’s done well. The Mondo animated X-Men are a great example of it. In a lower price point, NECA has done well with TMNT with a more basic approach in their toon line while their comic line has had some pretty complex paint apps to mimic the comic shading. The original intent of shading in 2D art isn’t just to make the object appear three-dimensional, it’s also to help make it visible. Venom, in a comic or cartoon, wouldn’t have any of the detail we’re accustomed to seeing if he was just a black object. And light isn’t going to shade a human in the same way it will a 1:12 version of the same person so the whole “Figures exist in 3D and therefore don’t require shading” has never held much water. I’m not saying everyone should want it, but if the goal is to have a figure look like the source material as close as possible then it’s going to require shading of some kind.

The cel shading look can be pretty cool when done right. It seems to be somewhat hard to pull off correctly though.
I almost pulled the trigger on Spier-Man when it was on BBTS, but I don't know if I can justify yet another Spidey among the multiples I have already for that price point. Maybe if it ever comes back down to a more palatable price I can go for it. But I doubt that may ever happen. It's too bad.
