Mattel Blast and Battle Xl-15 (same as on Hisstank)

Fri May 20, 2022 6:58 pm

Crazy ideas for the Mattel Blast and Battle Xl-15 or the Greatest Classified Aircraft not made by Hasbro.

Iron Ken 3000 over on YouTube has already shown off the GI Joe Conquest X-30 and Cobra Night Raven repaints.

Image

Night Raven image thanks to BodyMassage's HIsstank post.

Image

It has already been said that the XL-15 is very reminiscent of the Viper from Battlestar Galactica.

Image

Now I really didn't think Viper Mk II right of the bat but the atmospheric Viper from Caprica since I had quickly cobbled together a render with the colors of the vintage Viper (twin pusher prop in the show) that was based on the Flying Tigers.

Image

The way Buzz Lightyear ejects from the toy and his wing pack is the back of his seat and then deploys is very much like the VF-25 from Macross Frontier. Macross, Skull One, VF-84.

Image

VF-84, Navy, The bottom half of the toy is already light blue and Naval Aviation just had a centennial with F-18's painted like WW2 aircraft.

Image

Blue is Cobra Rattlers. Confusing to have the Joes with a blue aircraft in the same AOR. Back to Basics with the Army Air Corps with the D Day USAF A-10.

Image

Still couldn't shake space since the XL-25 is a space craft. Farscape? NASA, USAF? Edwards. F104. Bash together the liveries from the 1960's to the 80's

Image

The USAF NASA scheme also reminds me of the T-6 Texan II without having US Air Force across both sides of the nose.

This keeps repaint to a minimum (top and bottom are the original colors) but has the most pinstripes with the two layers of gold over the dark blue plus the black stripes on the vertical fins.

Clearly, I really like the XL-15 and favor the last render.

Cobra will be getting an aircraft with the Fortnite Jazzware Choppa fitted out like a Little Bird so the XL-15 won't fit my Cobra aesthetic of the Choppa and the two Coils.

Image

The Joes already have two Halo Mantis (mantises, mantes, Manti????) that need to be outfitted and repainted.

Image

If I can get a GI Joe Sigma 6 Dragonhawk to modify as a Mantis carrier then the Vintage Viper or D Day paint schemes are the way to go to match the Ram cycle and a ground attack role.

Lady Jaye is already equipped for flight duty but also have a ready made Cobra Astronaut.

Image

There is the Hasbro Fortnite Astronaut two pack that was a Target exclusive. Couldn't get it online, was never in store here and then clearanced at $14. Looks like an ebay purchase. Sadly the review of the female figure highlights limited articulation.

Now, I was able to get one XL-15 locally and at the MSRP of $44. Iron Ken ordered two from Amazon, current price $41, but (according to his latest video) the shipment has been delayed.

https://youtu.be/4VEg3MbEiio

BBTS has it for $53. Hopefully, this stays on the market for a while without price increases.

If this was just a dust collector on my desk at work it would be Lady Jaye with BSG Viper or an astronaut with the USAF NASA.

Yet if I do BSG then it can't return to the Joes.

What would you do?
What schemes do you think would suit the XL-15?

Oh and when I get around to it, this will be done with a brush and rattle cans. I am without my airbrush, color printer and work space.

Important housekeeping. The wings and fuselage are not symmetrical.

The Starboard wing, not mounted in the package, just slides on to the fuselage.

Image

The Port wing has screws and pins that pass through the fuselage mounting point. You will have to remove 4x #2 Philips screws then slide off the bottom blue panel first.

Image

Be careful of the springs. The top white panel was interesting to remove.

Take care the center tap on the inside is just a guide, not a lock. I caused the white stress marks getting the top part of the wing off.

Image

The tab is just visible in the shadow adjacent to the firing button.

Blue bottom piece removed from port wing.

Image

Rivet detail from starboard wing mount.

Image

There are 2x metal rivets inserted from bottom to top on the starboard wing mount.

I didn't have a punch, hammer or a heat gun to remove them.

I first shaved down both plastic dimples on the top side of the wing mount then soaked the mount in boiling water.

Used a 7mm torx driver and tapped the rivet out with my hand.

Soak and repeat.

Remove the remaining screws from the bottom to separate the fuselage.

Image

The ejector mechanism is held in place by 2x Philips screws.

Image

The slider, floor and foot rest are all one assembly that just rests on the bottom fuselage.

Image

The slider latch rests in the top part of the fuselage. There is a spring on the bottom.

Image

Image

The engines are attached by 2x Philips screws from the inside of the fuselage.

Image

The engine intake is a separate piece molded in blue but the engine assembly is glued together. The two screws are still visible in the fuselage.

Floor separated from the slider. Note the small spring in the center that was around the pin.

Uncut slider reinstalled in the fuselage. First image is fully aft. Second fully forward.

Flipped the floor over and reattached it to the footrest.

Image

Popped it back inside for a possible seat with back bulkhead.

Image

No cutting other than around the rivets but see areas that will be improved with cutting.

This is a durable and nicely engineered toy. The canopy catch could be a little longer.

The voids on the inside on the landing gear and non-rolling wheels are the only nit pick that I can think of.

How it is secured inside the box is interesting. You get some blue plastic gribbles that match the bottom of the fuselage.

Perhaps use them as hard points for wing stores.

If they were taller could be used as maintenance stands.

And Jazwares Fortnite Dark Voyager doesn't seem to fit in a seated position.

Image

Image

With some cutting he might fit but think that helmet will be a problem.

The cockpit was originally designed for a plus 5 inch Buzz and his folding wings to recline back with a claw arm around his waist and his feet pinned into the foot rest.

Pull the dark gray handle in the back and the canopy open, Buzz pops up and the wings unfold.

Sorry that I have neither of the figures you requested for fitting but I did stuff a BAT in.

Two Classified figures will fit in Tandem.

Image

The only thing cut is the Slider bar. The key to having the pilot sit more upright is to have their head centered in the void on the bottom of the canopy.

Image

But both Duke and Scarlett inside with Duke "holding" the controls.

Image

With a second seater just need to keep their legs out of the track that the slider moves fore and aft in on the sides of the cockpit.

Here is where I cut the cross section off the Slider Bar. I retained the little partition on the inside.

Image

Didn't have a saw but just used the blade and cleaned up the ends with a fine nail file to knock down the edges.

Nice work. I wish the pilot could sit closer to the center of the canopy though.

Yes, the male seated position is not ideal still better than fully reclined.

And two male figures will not fit.

The back "cargo" area is too narrow for their broad shoulders.

Image

The sides marked in red need to be cut out to fit the shoulders and arms.

Possibly the area in Magenta cut off so the second figure can recline .

Besides, the second figure is not visible through the canopy anyway.

Hope the upload didn't screw with the resolution.

There is both and inch and cm scale on the PNG.
