Bananaman's custom dio thread

Sat Oct 17, 2020 9:09 pm

Diorama making is huge part of the fun for collecting action figures for me. I love building environments and making the figure come to life.
I Just started a new diorama. I Wanted to create a rooftop dio for 4-5 figures that can be hung on a wall.
Just thought that I would share some work in progress pictures. Pleased with it thus far. Everything I know about making dio's I have picked up on this forum so critiques and suggestions would be appreciated.
My only rules for my dio making are - spend as little as possible - repurpose items-and have fun doing it.
This particular structure is repurposed foam board, polystyrene packaging and some odds and end Balsa pieces.

Batman is trying it for size:

Taking shape and added some paint:

Friday night is dio night, added my long unfinished Mr freeze custom for scale. Mr Freeze is still looking for a better helmet, gun and hose. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Do you remember as a kid repurposing boxes and packaging and creating your own play sets?

Back then Star wars was my jam and the polystyrene came ready made for your next battle of hoth......

Yeah, So I am still doing it......these days the boxes come from airfryers etc but the foam packaging comes in all sorts of inspiring shapes and sizes.

I love creating environments for my little plastic men and here is Friday nights effort. Very quick and easy, some hot glue and foam cutter to reconfigure the polystyrene packaging

and voila....some Snowtextured paint and straight from the pages of Batman Cataclysm

.....a portion of a Destroyed Gotham City building.

I plan on adding some broken 'glass' to the windows and call it a day.

One super cheap. eco friendly. super recycle 1:12 Dio for your favorite or least favorite action figure...DC, GiJ, Marvel legends or LOL dolls.

Thanks for watching!

Back at it with the foam cutter, this time a Gothic archway for somewhere in Gotham City.....Early days but it shows promise. Its actually reversible, you can display it from either side. Thats the Plan anyways..we will see how it pans out. My diorama always start out with one direction but often end up with another...

Another piece finished. Really happy with how this one turned out. Learned a few things and the confidence level with the foam cutter is improving. Opens up all sorts of future possibilities. Foam is so light, strong and best of all free!....... if you don't mind the occasional dumpster dive....

Thats too kind, thank you.

A couple of new additions. Lock down provides lots of opportunity for dio building and my investment in the foam cutter is paying off.
Destroyed building.

I have always wanted to tackle the Batcave, but it is a little daunting given how big a convincing one would be. I have decided to go the modular route and create a piece at a time that can be joined together. This first corner will be to house the Batcomputer.

Now to find a convincing Batcomputer........

Your construction and paint skills are very good. The dio's are very lifelike, impressive!

New one that I was able to throw together very quickly. I picked up the new McFarland Batcycle and wanted to create a display for it. Stumbled upon some source material and decided to go for it.
Image
The dio is once again mainly free packaging styrofoam, an old fodder Mattel Multiverse figure and some super cheap halloween skeletons from Michaels.
Pleased with the final result and looking forward to adding Death Metal Batman when he arrives.

Loving the new Mafex DC comic book figures and think I will use this for their Hush line. Time for a generous Modgepodge layer and another piece is finished.
