Is it maybe an issue where the demand isn't there with modern video game figures?
The Overwatch line didn't seem to do that great. Plus when Jazwares had the Fortnite line the first time it's not like the figures were flying off the shelves.
Bingo.
The reason we tend to think in terms of 'what cool action figures can this game produce' is because we're already toy collectors that naturally and instinctively want toys of things we like. We're coming from a totally different perspective than other types of hobbyists.
The logic of 'this thing is popular, so toys of it will sell' is flawed at a foundational level. 'Normal' people can like a thing without wanting action figures of it, because they're not action figure -collectors- in the first place. I had a friend back when NECA did their first Robocop figure that was a MASSIVE Robocop fan. Could quote every movie like he had the script out in front of him. Had a vintage movie poster in his theater room. Had a replica of the Auto 9. Big fan. I showed him the NECA figure and his reaction was just 'Oh, that looks cool.' The end. He just had no interest in buying and displaying an action figure even of his favorite property in the world.
I had a very similar experience with another friend that was a hardcore GOT fan right when Funko was doing the 6" GOT figures.
We want action figures of things we like specifically because we are action figure collectors. It's weird that we tend to approach things from this idea that if you just make action figures for things, people that like those things will want the figures. That's kind of opposite to how this usually works. It's like saying if they make action figures for Star Trek, I'm going to suddenly start watching Star Trek because I like action figures. It doesn't work that way.
While I do agree with all of that. Fortnite did appear to have the kid audience. Fortnite is one of the only lines that myself, my kids and some of his friends actually did collect. None of them were typically into action figures outside of WWE and Fortnite. They would go to the occasional Marvel DC and Star Wars movie but that is where their interest ended.
So did Jazwares secretly get back the 6inch license, or am I trippin? Pics from ToyFair show Agent Peely in the "Legendary" package, which if I remember right was the 6 inch line. Looks like a re-release, but that would be great if they got the license back.
