I’m all for getting all characters made from all SF games. Cuz why not? I’m actually a little worried when Jada starts adopting releasing figures from different games as opposed to just focusing on one game like they did with USF2. I see the plus side of doing that, but the down side is it increases the chance of less popular characters not making the cut. I guess Jada can counter that by releasing alternate outfit versions of the more popular characters to help anchor the waves. P2 colors of the Alist may not cut it, but actual alternate outfits that will require new sculpts might help.
Personally I would like to see them focus on the Alpha games next, between getting the Final Fight guys as well as some of the supporting characters who figure into the story of SF2 that would appeal to me most, but there are some really cool designs in SF3, I just don’t feel as connected to them on a character level. I’ll pick up whoever they choose to make, but I know very little about the new characters from SF4 on, other than thinking guys like Rufus and F.A.N.G. looked incredibly lame.
I can't believe I'm saying this. Guile's shoulders are TOO big. I am constantly bemoaning how small Marvel legends and other figure shoulders are too small. But for this line, compared to the other figures, the Size of his head... it's just too big. I guess it's better than too small, but it looks ridiculous when seen head on. In the other poses to hide it it will be allright, but compared to the prototype, (which could have used a little larger shoulders, and his torso seemed smaller) this is very cartoonish looking.
Shoulder level...
Anemic
Normal
Comically oversized
It's a bummer because this was my favorite current toyline. It was nearly flawless. Chalk up the first big flaw. Time will tell when we see production figures of all the other protypes we have seen so far.
I don’t know. This might be an individual thing. I always thought Guile was supposed to have ridiculously large shoulders so the shoulders on this figure look par for course to me. Like his shoulders should be larger that Ryu or Ken. I keep remembering that Champion Edition art of P2 color Guile showing his profile and him flexing his right arm with these huge shoulders.
Sure they should be bigger, but this is egregious. Guile wasn't supposed to be Schwarzenegger, he was just supposed to be buff. This toys shoulder girdle is wider than olympia Arnold and his Shoulders are also larger. Better this than the Sixlets that Sunfire Spiderman has I guess.
Like I said, its a preference thing. Look at some of the art for Guile during those times. He is ridiculously big. Much bigger than Arnold ever was. It’s anime art exaggerations. You are perfectly fine not to like it, but just know it is not without precedence.
Guile's shoulders do look a little too large and ball-shaped, imo. And I also think his hands are too small by a touch compared to his massive arms. I'm not too bothered by it, though, I can see what they were going for and I'm confident he will look good in action poses.
At least his arms don't look horribly out of proportion to his torso. They don't look like Mattel's WWE Elite Rhyno figure where his torso is realistic and his arms are gorilla arms:
God. I’d forgotten how mad I am that they messed up Rhyno so bad.
I'll wait to pass judgement til I have him in hand, but I do think the shoulders are a little--bulbous? Like the width doesn't bug me much but they have a look of an older toyline, not as streamlined and elegant as the previous figures. I can make it work though.
Yes Guile has comical proportions but that is accurate to game design so I can't complain. If it weren't accurate it'd be silly, but all these fighting games give characters silly proportions.
Going to complain again though that Vega's arms are completely incorrect to his design. Really hope they fix that in release or make a V2 asap, because as is? I really can't say I will buy it despite him being the only character (outside Cammy) that I'm looking forward to from what's revealed.
They shouldn't focus down on a single specific game at a time. I can't really say USF2 even had two proper "anchors" for every wave like they intended, but going forward every game is very up and down on how many wave "anchors" they have. Granted, I think most characters would sell. But a mix to average out the playing field for all the games would be for the best.
Now that 017 are done I actually agree that Jada should jump to different characters from different games but that still increases the chances of a certain roster not being completed. Now getting everybody is not everyone’s thing, but that will be the challenge for Jada of who makes the cut for every wave after USF2.
Also, I’m a bit confused about USF2 not having anchors in every wave like they intended? Of the waves released so far there have been anchors. The Alisters. Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Cammy, Guile. Arguably Bison too. Some have cross gen appeal. Most even showed up in a Disney movie.
@leor They've been pretty fine for the most part, but with this most recent set of 5 reveals at SDCC... I could only consider Zangief and Akuma as essential anchors for a Street Fighter line, leaving us down an anchor or two for these upcoming two waves or however they release them.
Aiming specifically to complete rosters doesn't really make sense for Street Fighter past the 19 from USF2 anyways. That was the foundation of the line on multiple fronts, to prove it can deliver what fans want. Now is their time to deliver.
If a game takes 2-3 years, assuming we went in order, it'd be 6-7 before we get to very basic characters like Juri or Poison. A good line-up, for me, would having "sets" (not waves) of 5 characters in development at a time. Three mainstays/reuse, two wild cards. Two would be classic (Alpha/3S), two would be modern (IV/V/VI), and then an extra slot for a special surprise (Rival Schools? Final Fight? An extra of either category? Who knows!). So for example, a "set" could be Alpha Ken, Oro, Poison, VI Chunners, and Batsu Ichimonji.
I’d consider Sagat an anchor. But excluding him, that leaves Akuma and Zangief as an anchor as you said for the last two waves which sounds like how it should be.
Now I can see what you are saying about jumping to different games past USF2. I’m in agreement for the most part and I believe Jada mentioned this is their way going forward.
But there’s a little part of me concerned with this approach because that was literally the approach every other holder of the SF toy license has done and the line died prematurely or is taking forever like Storm and figuarts. Now I recognize there’s a buncha other variables that happened with the other toy makers , but I wonder if focusing on one game at a time is actually having a bigger affect on collectors for Jada SF by giving them a sense of realistic completion of a roster rather than the uncertainty of what is coming next.
Every other attempt at Street Fighter toys is fairly incomparable. SOTA was released during a time when Street Fighter and fighting games in general were a financial disaster. Storm and Figuarts are an insanely different pricepoint with maybe 2 or 3 figures total a year, they'd be insane not to put some variety.
I fully believe a variety lineup will succeed in today, where Street Fighter is currently making crazy money.
