I know it's probably pointless to resurrect this thread, but i was debating on getting some of the last figures I never got, the 4 Street Fighter crossover figures. I was wondering if anyone had them and if they're any good? They look cool, and they got that deluxe pricing. But the aftermarket on them is fairly cheap so I was debating on getting them, if they were any good. And maybe if there were any good alternate non helmet heads that would fit on them as well.
I don't have any of them but this very objective YouTube reviewer reviewed all four and gave them 9, 8, 7, and 7 out of 10.
So I bought Chun Li to see how it is since she's the one I'd want most and she seems like the hardest of the lot to get. I have to wait till she gets here to judge though. But I did notice that the Jada SF figures fit in with hasbros lines fairly well. So I may buy those too and use the alternate heads for power rangers or something. They're not too expensive and the figures themselves look nice. So if I dont have to mod the heads I can mix and match. If I do then I can just decide which heads I want where.
So... it is utterly hilarious to me that Hasbro bought Power Rangers outright and is now licensing the property back out to someone else to make toys. But Playmates "announced" that they were releasing a Power Rangers toy line that would debut in "Fall 2025" back at SDCC last year, so other than the "Reignition" name, there's still no new information. And the scuttlebutt from last summer was that it's going to be a "kid targeted toy line" based on Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.
So, a toy line aimed at kids, but still based on the iteration of Power Rangers that aired 30 years ago. Fascinating.
Parents are the ones that buy the toys. The first 3 seasons are still what people think of when they hear "power rangers". There are parents that will buy MMPR toys for their kids out of nostalgia.
Kids today have no need for power rangers when Marvel movies exist for their super hero fix.
I got a Jada Chun Li head and modded it to fit the PR body. Looks really nice on there ngl. I also nabbed a Ken and Ryu, but they look a little big. Ken also looks like his skin tone will be too orange for the PR figure so I'll have to paint something most likely. I hope the body they used for them is a bit on be bigger side like the yellow Jason was. The heads would probably look fine on that one. But I won't be getting those ones just yet.
@mwoo as a parent myself who bought a handful of old Bandai MMPR figures for my kids, I can say this phenomenon is true. Is it a big enough one to sustain a toyline? I have my doubts, but best of luck to Playmates as they try. I'm expecting a similar approach to the line as their Mutant Mayhem one, which seems fine, but has zero appeal for me as an adult. That property has a movie and a TV show to interest kids, MMPR is relying on kids finding it on Netflix (I think?) or being exposed to it via their parents and wanting toys. And as a parent of modern kids, live-action has always been a hard sell. My kids watched MMPR for maybe a summer and I swear they only watched it because they liked the theme song and they did like the old toys (the combining Megazord was a big hit). Once the show itself was on they would play and do stuff and only passively consume it.
And since this is basically for all MMPR talk, I ended up cancelling my Mezco preorder for the set of 5. I have the Green Ranger and he's great, but Mezco's dicking around with release dates was just too much for me. I hated having this 400 dollar item dangling over my head that could drop at any time. And I was only keeping it because I preordered on Entertainment Earth when they had some sale going on so I got a decent discount, though it was still about 400 after tax and everything. It's probably one of those things I just don't need as a casual MMPR fan.
This may, in fact, be the slowest clap ever...
You can kinda tell from the silhouettes the lack of good articulation.
I just can't muster any excitement because we probably already have the best MMPR toys we are likely to get. If by some small chance Playmates offers something I don't have that fits in with what I DO have then I'd be for it, but that seems unlikely.
I'll just throw this right here because I completed my vintage Dragonzord yesterday. That black piece that is under the five red lights on his staff goes for $20-$30 on eBay. I've been wanting this complete for so long I was almost just going to bite the bullet. But I found it yesterday at my LCS in a 25 cent bin! So stoked! I have custom labels on it that are show accurate.
Of course, shortly after I cancel that Mezco preorder people start getting sets of the Power Rangers and now FOMO is kicking in. I had a discounted rate too which makes it highly unlikely I swallow my pride and reup.
So I have all the street fighter rangers now. I had to replace both chun li and Ryu. Their hands broke when trying to swap them out. The peg ripped out of the hand and tore the peg out. The replacement Ryu had one of his hands break that way too, but luckily it was the other side. And then of course, I check Ken and Ken's breaks and I can't get a free replacement for that one. So it seems to be a flaw of some sort, maybe just with the street fighter figures I don't know, but it seems their plastic is easily tearable on the inside of their hands.
