Mercari - "No More Selling Fees" - Yay, Nay or Huh?

Mercari sent a bunch of messaging this week that they've eliminated selling fees for new items. I thought about purchasing a loose SW figure for $28 and the total came out to $39 and change, including a $4 shipping fee. The fees they've now tacked on came out to $4.39.

How do y'all feel about this switch? I did not continue with the purchase.

I guess this makes sense for sellers, shifting the listing fee burden to the customer. But as a customer, it's basically paying extra to shop on Mercari? Or am I misinterpreting the situation?

@schizm They don't charge fees to the buyer if the buyer has money in their Mercari account (meaning that the buyer is also selling items).

They also charge sellers $2 to withdraw money to their bank accounts.

So it seems like they are trying to keep money in the Mercari system...

Interesting. I currently have a zero balance because I used my earnings on a purchase - but if I had left a certain amount I wouldn't be charged? I didn't see that in the communications.

Sounds like a great way to limit their customer base. I suspect the vast majority of Mercari buyers are "casual," meaning they only came there because they couldn't find an item somewhere else. They won't be sellers who also bjuy. And when they see those extra fees, they will drop the transaction, as described above. This won't help Mercari grow their business.

How is  Mercari for selling? Do they send you the tax form at the end of the year. I was thinking of opening an account there to sell some items.

I was wondering the same thing.

I know ebay delayed that

I do a lot of selling on Mercari, and I really like it.  Biggest benefit compared to eBay is that there are no returns once the buyer rates you or after 3 days from delivery.   They've changed their return policy a bit with the latest update, so we'll have to see how it shakes out.

Mercari is good for buyers, too - buyers can add multiple items to their cart from a single seller and pay for shipping for only one item.

They do send tax forms if you sell over $600 for the year, though.

I've sold a lot on Mercari. Figures have gone faster than on eBay. I really like it as both a seller and a buyer, but that was before their recent update. Previously, one amazing thing they did as a seller, was to show you how much you'd get after fees were taken out when you listed your price. It would live update as you'd adjust the price. Ebay seems to purposely make it difficult to find out how much you're getting in the end.

I also really liked how they handled shipping, and that anyone could make an offer on anything. I snagged a couple good finds with offers.

Unsure of what these changes are going to bring.

I liked Mercari as a buyer because the seller doesn't get paid until the buyer receives the item. This is good because it gives the buyer more incentive to ship out the product quicker so they can get paid. I've sold a few items mercari and had no issues.

Moving forward, I WON'T be buying off mercari due to the added fees. I'm not going to pay over $30 for an item that originally was going to cost $20 plus the shipping cost and now there added fees.

This is NOT how you compete with eBay!
