Well, have you watched all 10 eps yet? Are you as smitten I am?
I am 6 eps in. It is fantastic. A great reworking of Batman that pays homage to Batmen of the past but also gives us something new. The visual storytelling, the use of color, so good.
I finished watching it, yesterday. I liked it, had a few gripes, but otherwise, it's still good.
I finished it last night. I can't believe David Zaslav blew it again. What a moron.
I really disliked the first episode, which gave me concerns about the show as a whole. I thought they were going in the soft relaunch direction/capitalizing on BTAS nostalgia. I was relieved to find that I loved what came after. Even though it's got that odd 1930s feel, it's very much its own thing.
I thought the season peaked between episodes two (Clayface) and six (Gentleman Ghost). It had some of the best Batman storytelling I've seen. The subtle reinvention of Catwoman and Harley, two of my favorite comic characters period, was unexpected and refreshing.
I love that there were some deep cuts we hadn't seen in BTAS. Nocturna and Onomatopoeia were cool pulls even though I found the latter's episode to be the second-weakest in the season.
I thought the last two Two-Face-centric episodes were a little stale, but that's a result of consuming too much Batman content over the years. I had a feeling I knew where we were going with Harvey Dent from the start and the show didn't deviate from the regular blueprint at all.
As a personal aside, we just adopted a kitten from a litter our friends found in their yard. We named him Harvey, so hearing about Dent's evil exploits at the end of the season was kind of funny as I watched our very own Harvey run around the house like a 12-week-old madman.
All in all, I'm hooked and can't wait for more.[/spoiler]
I watched this one with my son (10). This kid has never given a shit about Batman except for a very brief period quite a few years ago, but he agreed to give it a try with me. Unenthusiastically.
He loved it. Kept getting upset because we watched it close to bedtime and I wouldn't let him stay up for another episode (even after I already let him stay up for one more episode). We finished the show in three days, I think.
I, also, loved it. It managed to feel so similar to the show I love so much, while still being its own thing. Now, don't misunderstand - I am not a Batman lore expert. But to me, some of these were very new/interesting takes on the classic villains and story beats I'm familiar with. I'll put the rest in spoilers.
Female Penguin, Harley without the Joker backstory, and Clayface were all really interesting to me in terms of how they were handled and how they differed from the versions I know best. It was exciting to see something that isn't just 'the same character, but in a different art style' or 'the same character, but live action.' Kind of like Riddler in The Battinson.
Probably for the same reason, the most uninspired part of the entire show was Dent. I get that this is (probably?) different than usual since this version of Dent was already a bit of a dirt bag to begin with. Besides that it felt like same ol' Dent stuff. I actually particularly kind of hated that Dent was physically pretty capable. Even fighting Batman. Admittedly he was injured, but even with a full on concussion I feel like Batman should absolutely wreck Dent.
Otherwise, the villains were handled so well that I found myself crossing my fingers hoping that we'd get to see this show's version of Mr. Freeze - one of my all-time favorites from the '90s cartoon.
Anyway, I could go on and on. But ultimately my opinion boils down to this show just being very good with considerably few missteps. It was able to hold mine and my son's attention at the same time pretty much without fail and we were both able to enjoy it I'd say an equal amount. That's pretty cool. I hope they manage a second season and it's just as good as this.
I think you nailed the Harvey Dent stuff. It's just a little too familiar.
I can forgive that last fight because of the concussion and this is basically Batman in his rookie year.
An excellent series that gives a new freshness to the bat-like dark knight of Gotham with a nostalgic hype of the legendary 1992 series.
