Yes he is, he recently (?) became red Guardian, his original costume was way better and looked cool.
With Red Widow coming sometime “soon”, I REALLY hope they turn their focus on making a Vanguard so we can get the classic Soviet Super-Soldiers finished (while still leaving room for the expanded Winter Guard).

I really love this image and this lineup. Would be very cool to flesh this team out with figures of Perun, Vostok, and Chernobog. And I'll take as many iterations of Crimson Dynamo as they want to make, including this one!

This is the classic Vanguard in the blue and white that he wore as part of the Soviet Super-Soldiers. We have Ursa Major and Darkstar. This Crimson Dynamo armor is the one Marvel Select is making, though he will definitely stand tall next to his ML counterparts. ML should take a crack at Gremlin Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo like Akat said!

I really would love to see this Vanguard in ML form. While I'd also love that era Vostok and Perun and an ML version of Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo, this version of Vanguard and the MS armored two would be enough to make me happy with my "Soviet Super-Soldiers" display...for now.

while Red Guardian has been any number of different people wearing the red suit. Currently, Nikolai is wearing the Red Guardian suit, but he is the sixth man, and seventh person to wear it - so when people say they want Vanguard it is the classic costume above that he wore for YEARS that they are asking for.
Agreed, @akajomiha. I'd love ML versions of this Titanium Man and Dynamo as well, but the Select versions look so good I'm happy to have them stand in until such time as Hasbro gets to them.
My Red Guardian is currently holding a hammer and sickle I had from other toys, ostensibly standing in as Nicolai there, but once a proper Vanguard in this costume is made, then he'll switch back to being Josef Petkus in my mind.
Classic Vanguard is a must in MLs...as is a classic Crimson Dynamo and classic Titanium Man.

I admit I do worry that in today's socio/political clime, that Hasbro might be a little gun-shy to release Vanguard in this look due to the Soviet hammer & sickle on his chest. I can already hear cries of "They're trying to make our children Commies!" coming from certain parties and groups. He may end up having to be an online retailer exclusive from Gamestop, Amazon, or BBTS or something.
Package him with a repainted classic Captain America with a more maniacal headsculpt and market it as a "Vanguard vs Captain America...Commie Smasher!" two-pack. Should balance the scales.
Great cover, h-bird! One of John Romita Sr's very early attempts at superheroes! Even then you could tell he was destined for greatness. And the villain of that particular piece? Electro! (A name that Spider-Man would get to know well years later)
Love all the Winter Guard and Soviet Super Soldiers talk! Such a fun team of colorful villains/antagonists. Love that Hasbro is continuing to add to these teams with Red Widow.
