The Fantastic Four have landed.
Mezco figures are really set up for those who love to photograph their figures. They come with SO MANY accessories to give a photographer variety and enable them to tell a story. I'm not that collector. I'm a "choose a specific set of accessories and leave them that way forever". So I'm pretty overwhelmed by what this set comes with, but also pretty impressed.
There's like four layers of trays overlapping each other in the tin box. First is the figures, in their standard looks.
Sue is probably the weakest. The female body proportions seem odd on her, maybe because the costume is so plain and unforgiving. I don't love any of her head sculpts, specifically the hair style they went with. The hair exposes the forehead so that the magnetic effect can stick to it, but it makes her look odd. And the two other faces go from stern to angry, and it's more than what I'd need for Sue. Her invisibility effects are more like psionic blasts. The magnetic one is cool, but I haven't messed with the ones that attach to her hands. They also attach to each other in ways that really don't seem to support well. Some can attach to the effect on her forehead, but then become too heavy for the magnet to hold them. The huge shield is also held by tension that I'm sure won't hold up for prolonged display.
Johnny came out next. While I like a non-flamed look for him, there are lots of flame effects that can wrap around his limbs ambiguously. Meaning, I'm not sure if any are meant specifically for legs, forearms, biceps. I do know the largest one seems meant to wrap over his shoulders, but it flops right off in every position. He has two heads, a stern face, a smug grin, and the flamed head, which I won't be using. I went with smug. I also won't be using his flaming flight base, as it comes apart in two pieces, and feels like it won't support him for prolonged display. But his articulation is solid.
Reed is great. Maybe my favorite of the bunch. Also the most versatile in terms of display options. The long neck is bare, but I'd have preferred it to be black, so I won't use it. Looks too much like male anatomy. The elongated torso is permanently connected to the elongated arms. Can't do long arms on regular torso, or short arms on long torso. I'll be displaying with the long torso, regular hands (pointing and holding the Ultimate Nullifier), and regular legs (no long boots). He balances well in this combination. I tried with ALL of the elongated parts, and it's nearly impossible to balance that way. I also went with the stern head, as opposed to the grin or the bearded head.
Ben is good. Not as amazing and end all as I'd hoped. The sculpt is great, but he's a very terra cotta color rather than the sandy orange I'd prefer. Articulation is what you'd expect from a Thing figure. The rocky texture shows through his shorts at the thighs, but his pelvis is smooth, so there's no texture there, and that seems odd. I'm displaying him with the open hands and wearing the fedora and trench coat. The steel girder and Yancy Street light are cool, but kinda basic. The streetlight has sculpted wires protruding from the bottom of the base which keeps it from just standing on its own, unless I didn't realize they come off. I would have displayed it as just a street sign.
HERBIE is better than he has any right to be. All the little gizmos that are hidden on his body, from telescoping eyes, to a portable lab in his rump with removable beakers, an analysis tray and supercomputer in his front, pivoting rockets and arms with articulated claws, it's really a stand out in the set. Which seems so silly. He's more impressive than half the actual figures.
I do really love the set. I like that they're in their basic costumes, but kinda wish they had given at least some Mezco touches to the uniforms. I still need to reconfigure my display to fit them in, along with the incoming Dr Doom. I hope anyone else who got these enjoys them.
Got the F4 set a few days ago and it’s… fantastic. *whomp* Each night I’ve been messing around with a different set of figures. I haven’t had any time to take pics but it’s just so overwhelmingly joyful.
It really is the only F4 set you could need, and it pays homage to the Kirby fans of this team. This set next to Galactus and his heralds is just… just… *chef’s kiss* I noticed no one has really acknowledged the tin, which is one of their best ones ever. I need to find a way to display it as well.

How bendable are they? When you bend them do they stay in that position, or do they flex back to their original position?

The streetlight stays in position better than the girder. I didn't want to leave either of them bent though, because I know from experience, and it even states in the instructions, that bendy parts can deteriorate from repeated or prolonged use. I wound up putting them right back in their tray since I don't plan to display them.
Yeah; these might be on a variable display for me. Not wanting to leave cloth goods out 24/7/365 like I would a Marvel Legend or something. It is tempting to figure out a way to stand the Yancy Street sign and post a downward facing Ben in trenchcoat somewhere for a while though.

Why, due to dust?
Mine will go in a closed display case, so virtually no dust. I've got some Bowen statues that have been in my display cases for over 20 years with no visible dust on them.
Nice! Really hoping Spider-Man and Green Goblin will be out soon - I'm not planning to go deep into this line but really want those two and possibly a Doc Ock 🙂
Doom looks good. I just need someone to go over the range of motion before I commit.
D Amazing says he has Doom and is working on a review to go up this weekend. That one will definitely cover articulation.
Doom doesn't need much articulation to be fine. The Legends one is spectacular, but it has relatively poor articulation compared to most Legends, yet still really good when you consider the limitations of the armor, the tunic, and the cape.
He can definitely sit, if that helps your decision. I'm definitely looking forward to this one.
Is that the Select Doom chair he's sitting on in D Amazing's shot? Him sitting in that chair already makes him more flexible than the Legends version. That one can't really sit with his tunic, and definitely not with his cape.
@enigmaticclarity Yeah. I just haven't figured out where an enclosed display case could go.
Of course I'll still be in when ML inevitably makes a more classic / less Medieval Doom
I replaced the ML figure's plastic cape and skirt with soft goods, so he gets pretty good range.
I wish the elbows had more range. And of course the power siphon harness is completely unnecessary (he's $43 more than Green Goblin & glider). But I put an order in at BBTS.
