I would have taken Rom as just a generic robot for my Mego FF or Avengers to fight. When he debuted he had no comic back story for a bit so I would've just made him a generic Marvel murderbot henchman.
I never had the vintage ROM toy back in the day - it just wasn't something that came up - I remember him, obviously, and remember the commercials and print ads - but he was one my parents never bought me and no one gave me as a present. But I do remember reading the Marvel Comic. I didn't start with issue 1 - I was still on a fairly limited budget back then and had to be a little picky about which books I spent my allowance on. But once the X-Men showed up I grabbed that and then the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants were in it and he had a fair few other guest stars and I started reading more about the Galadorians and Dire Wraiths and etc.
Was there a date given when these are expected to go up for preorder?
Definitely better than the original toy, that's why I'm excited to finally be getting what I thought it should have been in the first place. Funny thing is, I never read the comics, never had the figure and yet, I always wanted him. I don't know if it was because of the commercials, or the fact that he was a new sci-fi related toy, but I was drawn to him as a kid.
Who cares if it were a shared URL? Honestly the best thing Marvel could do is give away some free comics to entice new readers. That's worth way more than future digital comic sales for Infinity Gauntlet #1.
Not to mention the fact that comics are some of the most readily available pirated content online.
I feel that it's an understatement to say just that. Almost everyone I've met under 30 pretty much exclusively reads comics through pirated sources, and only buy comics they've already read. The main exception is people like me who were raised by hardcore comic book geeks.
Marvel and DC could easily put major storylines and events up for free and reach a much broader stretch of people. Hell, they could take a tactic from manga publishers, and have the first few and latest few issues of runs available for free.
Is Rom given the nicely painted coat of silver paint (like the Ultron from Ursa Major) or the unpainted, crapy, dollar store swirly silver plastic (like the Ultron from Cassie Lang)? If the former: purchase. If the later: pass.
@yojoebro82 It's definitely painted on the stream, and that's what we should get.
This wave isnt for me, Banshee and i'm done. But that's fine with the cost of figures these days.
I think it might be neat to display 4th wall breaking characters reading comics with themselves in it. Gwenpool is aware she is a comic book character if I'm remembering right?
I'll buy a Banshee or two, one out of box and maybe a second if I end up wanting to display it in the packaging. Also a Daken.
I saw ROM on the comics stands constantly when I was buying as a kid. Never once picked one up. I never knew if it was armor and there was a dude in there, if he's an android, or what. So far this figure is in the same category for me that the comic was.
Why do people like this guy? I'm not saying we SHOULDN'T like him, I just have no idea why people do. I'm sure there's a story or character hook I'm completely unaware of.
I knew Rom by reputation only, but I bought the Rom Omnibus vol 1 when the figure was announced and have been working my way through it. It's pretty classic Marvel fare and I'm really enjoying it, and it's got me hyped for the figure.
ROM was the best in the beginning when Sal Buscema did the art. It got rough later on. Even though the stories were still great, the less-than-ideal art made it a chore.
