I'm out at $50 but excited for those that want it and got it. The PP head is so odd to me that I won't use it, the extra Spidey head isn't different enough, and TBH most of the accessories that they are upcharging for are relatively unpainted and kinda bland. You can make better webbing with a cheap pack of white floral wire from the craft store. But I am curious about the feel in hand - the plastic quality, ease of articulation on the joints, how fun he is to noodle around with. He looks greasy and shiny in their promo videos.
Frankly, I don't know how NECA does it, but their figures pack so much in for ~$35, and there's not always reuse. This Spidey buck could become a lot of superheroes, meanwhile, and still isn't matte.
That said, I'd jump for a Captain America and Iron Man at $50. Cap could repack a lot of his last two releases and I'd still buy, so long as they give him diaphragm articulation for shield throwing. Different belts, harnesses, a gun, shield permutations.
Sold out, sold out, sold out.
I guess this is how it all ended after all.
So buying Spider-Man Maximum is like applauding the death of Democracy and the beginning of the Galactic Empire? 😳
Maximum Spider-Man selling out initial preorders isn't that unexpected. Even with the higher pricepoint. But it's not gone for ever. Hell, Rom sold out. If you don't think Rom is going to be around and even being discounted a few months after he's out, you're kinda crazy. Yes, they're likely making less of each ML these days. There will still be plenty to be found down the road.
One aspect of this Maximum Spidey which bothers me is I believe this is the third classic comic red&blue Spider-Man in a row which is buried behind premium pricing. Amazing Friends. 2pk with Spinneret. And now this one. I think the last single-release of him was an animated one via Walmart. Feel free to correct me, though. Just feels kinda exploitive to keep putting classic Spider-Man behind paywalls. At least classic comic Iron Man hasn't been as exploited. Captain America keeps being released without his shield. And we haven't gotten a basic Hulk in a while. I fear classic, complete versions of A-listers being restricted to premium pricing could be troubling. Granted, I'm jumping the gun. And maybe Spider-Man is a special case exactly because people keep buying him at higher prices, so they can keep that tactic going.
The PP head is so odd to me that I won't use it
A lot of the digitally-printed heads look that way to me as well in the promo, but they often look better in hand. I'm withholding judgement on that along with everything else they pitched about this figure that none of us know yet, particularly the articulation improvements.
I mean picking McFarlane art as the inspiration seems like a potential massive over-flex on the part of the Legends team. McFarlane is the guy who started putting Spidey into impossible poses; can this figure really achieve ANY of the more extreme poses? We'll see, but I'm skeptical...
Here's an example, and one of McFarlane's most famous covers. If Spidey Maximum can't nail this pose that as far as I know no other figure can hit except perhaps gappy Amazing Yamaguchi figures then the Legends team overreached a bit.

Not at all since Pulse and Amazon always do limited pre-orders. If any of the other fan channels sell out then I'll start to think pretty much everyone here underestimated the demand for this figure.

This looks like it might be as close as it can get. Which really isn't too bad.
i don't think legends are hurting lol, they're putting out more product a year the last few years than they ever did... and the fact this figure already sold out in at least 2 places quickly, still shows there's a demand.
I just don't think because Hasbro offers and Apple and Jada offers an Orange, both round fruits.. people are going to stop buying apples for oranges. People want what they buy, and as long as Hasbro's putting out characters people love for the highest quality and cheapest price for that figure scale and selection... they're going to stick with them
I think it's valid complaints to say "why can this company do this much for this price, but you charge more for less" But I don't think it's going to get hasbro to lower prices (hell they'd lower production numbers before ever dropping the cost) But I don't think most collectors are just going to collect a whole line because "they look cool" several yes, most? no. Most collect a line do so because they have a connection and drive for the IP they're buying. That IP also needs to be evergreen, and have a demand for C and D list characters to stay strong. It's why its going to be really hard to top things like DC, Marvel, Star Wars. Where as NECA is already showing that with Gargoyles and Animated Turtles, you eventually hit a limit for demand, so you then have to shift and pivot
It's not just Jada. I've been more impressed by Masterverse and McFarlane's DC line, JoyToy TMNT, Mezco, Mafex. When you add it up, ML is pretty much the lowest just in terms of value and satisfaction. I mostly only find value in ML at sale prices, except for the odd figure like Spiral. It doesn't leave much room for ML.
There's always demand because the characters are popular. Mcfarlane sells bucket loads of Batman figures, and whilst some have been really good, many more have been, at best, middling. But even they have actually done more to improve their Batman figures in the few years they have had the license. They do stuff like that recent Dark Knight Returns figure with a higher price point, but some improved paintwork to justify that higher price point. It's not perfect, but the only time we get a deluxe price point in ML seems to be because they have chucked more plastic into it.
My issue isn't necessarily that I'm want cheaper; I'd happily pay more for a better product, but that's just not part of their model. They just think that giving more accessories equates to more value. And that encapsulates the line; don't worry about the quality, just flood the market with little care for making each release the best it could be.

Can't RYV and AF15 Spidey both already hit that pose in the promo? Well...AF15 doesn't have the toe joint so it can't do that part, but it has excellent torso and hip articulation. Dwight SPECIFICALLY said the hips on Maximum have more range of motion, but I can't entirely tell if that pose in the promo pic is showing it off to its max. It's definitely nowhere near McFarlane's version of that same pose which I've been assuming nobody will ever hit without introducing huge joint gaps like Kaiyodo does with Amazing Yamaguchi.
I'll probably try to pull out RYV, AF15, and Mafex Spidey over the next day or so to see how close all of them get to the Maximum promo and that Spider-Man #1 cover pose unless someone else beats me to it.
I tried to emulate the poses in the Maximum promo pics with my RYV Spidey. RYV couldn't quite hit some of them- specifically this one:

Much earlier in this thread I asserted that NO current figure could hit that pose, but someone corrected me on page 10 of this thread by showing two Mafex Spideys that can do it in his pics below. I didn't think those could do it, so I'm now not even sure RYV can't do it, but I intend to try soon. Right now mine is buried in a display.
I will enjoy reading 50 pages of discourse about how fair/unfair the price is with a complete lack of self-awareness that nobody has to buy this, and you do not need another Spider-Man figure and therefore are not being taken advantage of.
This is a pretty reactionary take if you think about it. The endpoint of it (which you may not advocate but which we are approaching societally) is that niceties are for the rich alone. That as long as something isn't absolutely essential to life and you don't *need* to buy it, it is ok that those of lower means are priced out. Should only the rich have hobbies?
What is the hobby in question? Collecting Hasbro Marvel Legends? Collecting Spider-Man figures? Collecting Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures? In any case, nobody who can't or doesn't want to spend $50 on one is priced out. There are only about 100 other Hasbro Spider-Man figures you can buy for half the price.
To me, he's a $35 figure, but I felt an extra $10 or $15 won't break me. If someone says that's not the point, well, congrats you have more principles than me. At least I'll fun with a possibly cool Spider-Man figure. I have so much money going out per month that brings no satisfaction. I'm looking at you house/auto insurance policy that went up about 65% the last few years, despite no claims. Or you electric bill going to a power company that had $800 million dollar profit announced today.

This is my rational. I too think this is a $35 figure, but an extra $15 also will not break me. I have a family situation that has made the last 3 months the most difficult of my life and it turns out that has caused me to spend less on figures than I have in I don't know how long. Life is hard and there comes a time when toy therapy is warranted. (Yep, I preordered one from BBTS).
A Hulk for me would have to have butterfly joints that move forward as well as backward, toe articulation, GOOD neck articulation that allows him to look UP in a hunched position, pinless joints. Alternate heads and hands (fists, grasping, thunder-clap). Maybe a shredded shirt that fits around his arms so it doesn't just flop off. I'd prefer the hue of green that the 80th Hulk used (in the 2pk with FA Wolverine). I also love that head sculpt, never liked the 20th Hulk heads. If this Spidey is 50, I'd hope they could pull off a Hulk like that for 60-65.
I'm glad common sense has prevailed (80th Anniversary Hulk has the best color scheme of any Hulk figure).
I'm gonna try to go back for MAFEX DD and I keep holding out hope that they will eventually get to Punisher.
I couldn't recommend it more. It's one of the best figures I own alongside MAFEX Gambit & Nightwing.
I mean I’m interested in Jada Street Fighter toys out of curiosity. Asked to play around with a friend’s Street Fighty guy for 5 min to check out its construction. Handed it back to him and said “I wish they’d get the DC license”. In no world would I buy it; not because I didn’t think it wasn’t well done or a bad price. I just don’t lie in that center circle of Street Fighter and Marvel fan on that Venn Diagram. Who’s to say how big that circle is. I doubt many people are making that jump JUST because Jada seems to be doing good work.
This is exactly where I'm at with Jada, Storm, and a few other quality companies. I'd love to buy your stuff, but I won't buy figures I have no connection to. It's against my toy-collecting philosophy. That's how I wind up resenting my collection again.
I have the opposite problem with McFarlane. I like a few of their licenses but hate their figures. I don't buy those, either.
Hasbro has had the license for decades and released a lot of figures, at some point maybe people will have enough Spider-Man figures by Hasbro? Or since this thing has sold out in multiple places already, maybe we're not even close to that day?
It'll never happen. Ask McFarlane when they plan to stop making Batman figures.

I was banging the drum for collectors being priced out when the line increased to $25/figure. This is not the same. This is marketed as a deluxe item. As CTV said, collectors who can't afford it can still grab a $25 Spider-Man.
Sold out, sold out, sold out.
