I'm not sure what I'm going to do here. As an avid MAFEX fan, I'm not opposed to paying $50 for an action figure. I have reservations about Hasbro's ability to deliver value for that price. Time will tell. If this is actually the definitive Spider-Man, this line will do fine. Even folks here who say they won't spend $50 will buy it.
The bigger issue is that I prefer classic Spidey with lighter blue colors and the fat spider symbol. I'll probably pass on the first version but I'd be interested in a classic re-issue.
If Hulk is a big upgrade on the 80th Anniversary figure, it's an instant pre-order. I'm curious to see if $50 is the line-wide price for the Maximum series. I doubt it. What could they charge for Hulk? $75?
Even folks here who say they won't spend $50 will buy it.
That's how many folks though; among fans devoted enough to get on a forum and voice their concerns? Given Hasbro's track record, it's not like the quality of the materials will increase with this line over any other Marvel Legend. I've had to buy an Avalanche over again because the bicep peg ripped. I'm grateful he was only $7 on clearance. Is this less likely to happen in this "premium" line? You're largely paying for accessories and supposed tooling, which will likely be reused multiple times over rather than holding certain things back to create this illusion of a two-tiered Marvel Legends ecosystem. I think that's what most people are balking at. Will desirable Spiderman figures be behind a paywall going forward? Is Hasbro trying to create a boutique community within the reasonably middle aged folks that already collect the stuff? None of these angles end well for Hasbro or grow the sales base. We've been told a 25% increase to a standard figure to $24.99 was reasonable and warranted, now we're being told double THAT price is acceptable for what they know people will "really want." Similar to the Marvel comics tactics of the day, this is largely about pressing fewer and fewer people into paying more money. That goose only lays for so long.
Disgusting but unsurprising price gouge. I'd love a webshooting hand, that's at least unique, but nah way I'm paying full price for this. Again, no stand to help him fly? PLUS $25?
Nope.
Also, I would preffer a backpack over some webs. A camera, maybe a punching effect.
Guess I have to wait for a Maximum Spider-Man 2.0...
That $50 price tag. YOWZA!
Yeah... I don't really buy MLs TOO much anymore. I guess I've become too spoiled by imports that they pale in comparison. ESPECIALLY where the plastic is concerned. I would have to REALLY like the look of the figure, like '90s Iron Man or the Reginald Hudlin Black Panther.
Before those two, it had been SOME time before I had bought ANY Marvel Legends. That said, I will try to pick this up since my MAFEX Spider-Man is in storage with most of my other figures.
NOTE: Another word on the plastic: this is why I've held off on Daredevil and Punisher. I'm gonna try to go back for MAFEX DD and I keep holding out hope that they will eventually get to Punisher.
How does this compare to the Renew Your Vows Spider-Man? I'd been thinking that was the updated version that I was waiting to appear as a single release; is the Maximum version an upgrade from that?
I think more people than not will end up getting this. As soon as Hasbro sends a couple of these figures off to the influencers, people on the fence will be won over quick. They won't stand a chance against that FOMO.
I'm already praying the first person Hasbro sends a figure to is a 45 year female YouTuber that crochets Marvel inspired plushies.
I am torn on this. I don't like that it is $50 but to me this is a better value than Phoenix was. I didn't feel that stand that came with her was worth the extra $25. I wanted her but not the stand I would never use. I love tons of accessories and I use them a lot when they include them with figures. I don't buy import figures due to the price or the aesthetic of them. They look wonky to me. However if Spidey here is $50 then how much will the rumored Hulk be? I have to admit I will probably get him. Bottom line is I don't buy full waves that often anymore unless it has a BAF I really want. The 80th line had multiple price points and so did the Anniversary lines. Some were worth it some not. The sad fact is action figures are going to get more expensive and contain less. I see the Maximum line as a middle ground.
we love Jada but they're not on Hasbro's radar.
They should be. They are Hasbro's direct competition on retail shelves (more so than Mafex ever was) and there are many people who believe that Jada (in their limited portfolio of 6" figure releases) are already doing things objectively better than Hasbro ML.
Putting aside all the extras this Spider-Man comes with, it's going to be a hard sell to convince me that the figure itself is SO much better as to warrant this price hike. Yes, it's a new buck and new tooling. So was the Vulcan buck at one time. The proportions on this figure appear to be on point but it doesn't cost more to do it correctly or to make the articulation function the way it should, just a willingness on the part of the manufacturer to do so.

I got Phoenix for $25 and considering the fact that Target barely ever stocked her (like all ML offerings) and I got "lucky" and found ONE left in stock at a store 45 minutes away available for order pick up, I consider that a fluke. A fluke I'm not counting on being repeated with this or any other price-gouged ML. If that DID happen, I'd be all in like anyone else here.
Half-off sale prices on phantom stock. What a racket.
A lot of this stuff (accessories and body parts) are new to this Spider-Man for this price point. That doesn't mean some of those pieces and parts won't be included with other standard MSRP Spider-Man releases down the line or that we won't get this same entire body down the road as a standard $24.99 figure, just without all the extras. Hasbro still is going to Hasbro and re-use tooling as much as they can. It may be a while but it will happen.
I'll gladly purchase one of these when they are marked down to a proper $29.99-$34.99.
I'm with what seems to be the majority opinion that this isn't a $50 figure, but it's priced that way. I'm not getting it. Curiosity would have got the better of me at $35 and maybe even $40, but I'm good. Even so, I think the Legends fanbase is more loyal than some people think. I think this is going to do well enough and people are going to buy it and some of that is because it's a brand new line. There will be enough curiosity purchases and I think most people, once they have it in hand, are more likely than not to find ways to convince themselves it was a worthwhile investment. It would have to be a disaster for the opposite to happen and I am guessing it will be fine in-hand, like most Legends are, and the line continues. The second release may be the more challenging one, especially if it's a $75 Hulk. Admittedly, I'm not a huge Hulk fan, but I don't know what Hulk fans are clamoring for in a figure that Hasbro hasn't already provided. Smart Hulk? Classic 70s TV Hulk?
I’ll buy it if they rerelease it later with just two extra pair of hands and the spiders sense and maybe the extra head at $24.99. Or was it $27.99? Disney spider tax a possibility.
A Hulk for me would have to have butterfly joints that move forward as well as backward, toe articulation, GOOD neck articulation that allows him to look UP in a hunched position, pinless joints. Alternate heads and hands (fists, grasping, thunder-clap). Maybe a shredded shirt that fits around his arms so it doesn't just flop off. I'd prefer the hue of green that the 80th Hulk used (in the 2pk with FA Wolverine). I also love that head sculpt, never liked the 20th Hulk heads. If this Spidey is 50, I'd hope they could pull off a Hulk like that for 60-65.
