Yeah, Goliath was another one I was able to stumble on by dumb luck. It was just a repaint of the Giant Man that came in the 5" First Appearance box set, but that was another set full of gems. Those late Toy Biz box sets were definitely a precursor to what we'd eventually get from Spider-Man Classics and Marvel Legends.
I can't believe how those waves and assortments are still engrained in my memory. ML was really such a big deal, and took up a lot of real estate in my noggin.
I feel the same way Norm. I'm glad they became more accessible online, because when I think back to how much time I spent driving store to store to find things...I'm still just as obsessed, I can just commit less time to it now and still end up with what I want to collect.
Those late Toy Biz sets really were incredible. I know the 'bro took a shot with the "All-New/Original" X-Men set, but those figures were dated before they even hit stores, and based on a reinterpretation of those looks. I would absolutely love First Appearance X-Men and Avengers sets to be made, modeled after those TB sets.
It's a riff on one of the FF's many airjet cycle things.
I need to track down that cycle for the modern Thing. I had some of the other Riders from that wave, but skipped Ben. More the fool, I.

Beware that the 1st appearance Thing that came with that cycle is a lot smaller than most subsequent Things. They don't fit on it very well or at all, depending on the figure.
Toybiz really screwed that Thing up with the uniformity of the scales. He's never been presented that way. He should have been proper lumpy FA Thing or had a scale pattern that was actually used in the comics.
That FA Thing was always one of my least favorite TB MLs. I never displayed it. Really the best part of that figure was the bike.
@normdapito The main kick in the teeth is that if I remember correctly he was pretty well scaled and the head sculpt is solid. Just the texture sculpt never should have made it past the editor.
@derrabbi Oh I hated the head sculpt! That was the worst thing about it to me. But everything about it the sculpt was just not what I wanted. It's too bad, because you're right, it was the best scaled Thing (not too big) and it had really good articulation too (barring the ball hips). It was just so goony looking. It looked like he was made of Cap'n Crunch cereal. Toy Biz was hit and miss, but when it missed, it really became notorious. Scarlet Mitch?
@normdapito I just thought it was meant to be this Thing. I thought head sculpt was in the ball park at least but nothing else was. On second glance the lips are of another ... rather unfortunate idiom in American cartooning.
@derrabbi I mean, if Kirby meant for the Thing to be repulsive to look at, then he totally got it right!
I mean that is sort of the point of the character. Its really the whole point of Marvel. The hero is the monster, the wall flower or the guy from Africa. All the captain of the football teams were the DC heroes.
Savage but fair.
IIRC, the figure was based on art by Arthur Adams of an interpretation of that 1st app Thing

Correct:
I like it for what it's supposed to be.
I love Art Adams' work, but that did not translate well. The proto was painted better, but the face is still off, with the gaping mouth. If it had gritted teeth, I might be whistling a different tune, but I stand by my distaste for this figure. I do appreciate the clarification on the source art though. (aside, the prototype bike is missing handlebars that the actual toy had. But it has a nice shiny metallic paint job, which the actual toy does not)
