Kirby always drew him with the brow, it's just hard to see it in that splash from FF#51. I think it's the angle he drew him or maybe just a bad inking job, but it's there. Iirc, Byrne stated in an interview that he didn't like how Ben had been softened up in the years after Kirby left. I think he even referred to Perez's Thing as being looking like Fozzie the bear. That's why he made him have less human-like anatomy, so he would look more monstrous and Thing-like.

You’re right. Now that I look closely at it, I can see where the protruding brow is meant to be. It’s there, but whether due to the inking and/or the angle, it doesn’t show up anywhere close to how it usually looks.

I’d have to say my favorite Thing is by Perez, followed by maybe one of the Buscema brothers. The issues from the 160s to around 200 are my favorite drawn depictions of the team. Including Marvel Two in One from that era.   I love the issue with Ben teaming with Stingray!

@hulkster1 I'm right there with you. I loved the Marvel Two-in-one issues that Perez did and his runs in FF were some of my favorites. That's why I'm still wanting a Thing figure with a Ben Grimm head to represent when he had lost his powers and Reed built him the exo suit.

Seems to me like Kirby meant for there to be a brow here.  The rocks all line up where the brow should be, but it definitely doesn't protrude much in the drawing.

Just the top line of the brow is a touch lighter than usual is all. Its totally there.

The Mezco is close, but not close enough for me.

Kirby:

Perez:

Byrne:

Mezco:

I hate those giant balls Mezco used for his wrists. I also don't like how plain/drab they painted him. He might look better with a black wash applied, but for that price, it should have been done already.

As for the Byrne version, I know it couldn't be done the way Byrne drew him. There's no real working joints to articulate. He would have to have bendy arms or something like it.

All this talk about the Thing today has been awesome!  I grew up with the Perez Thing mostly.  Collected comics during Byrne's run.  Appreciate what Kirby did to start it all.  Not really digging the Mezso look either.  Seems kind of plain.

I would be ecstatic to get a Legend in the Kirby or Perez look!  Don't think a Byrne version would look good in Legends due to articulation.

Second all the love shown for Marvel Two In One on the board.

The ML and Mezco Things both have small, numerous rocks.  Whereas I feel Kirby and especially Byrne had a bit larger rocks.  I feel like the rocks on Byrne's Thing were more flat and platelike while Kirby's had more depth.   Small subtle differences but it's something which sticks out to me.

Kinda like the bands on Colossus.  Classic Colossus had wider bands.  While modern Colossus looks go for narrow and almost coiled muscles
