The FF is the first superhero comic I started reading month to month around 1983, and that was a glorious age for the team since it was smack in the middle of the John Byrne run that revived the title.  I'm a mega-fan and have the entire comic run through around 2010 all in high grade.  While I love that Byrne run, I think my absolute favorite stories are the Mark Waid/Mike Wieringo run of the late 1990s/early 2000s.

I also have one singular favorite issue.  It used to be the Fantastic Four #48 to #50 run that introduced Galactus and Silver Surfer, but Mark Waid eclipsed it with a one-off story exploring Doctor Doom's youth when he fell in love with a Latverian woman named Valeria that Reed and Sue allowed Doom to name their daughter after.  Waid makes Doom highly relatable in that issue as he falls in love, yet simultaneously hideously evil as his true psychopathy cannot be contained.  LOVE that story in Fantastic Four volume 3 #67 released in 2003.  🤩

Marvel really should have made Pedro shave his mustache or have gone with someone else.  His chubby face doesn't resemble Reed to me.  Sue Storm seems passable.  Johnny Storm seems meh.  The Thing is too short, he doesn't have a commanding voice in rock form, and his "rocks" make him look too much like Korg from the Thor series.  Plus the sweater isn't necessary.

You say Thing looks like Korg.........I say Korg looks like THING.

Reed and Jonny are very much the product of "it" casting, the actors are both hot right now.  (You can't tell me Joseph Quinn would have been on anyone's radar for Jonny if he wasn't in the last Stranger Things.)

I'm OK with this casting.

Honestly, I've never read an FF comic, so I have no idea what gender the robot is.

You know of many women named 'Herbert'?

Is that the robot's name or is it H.E.R.B.I.E.? I dunno man. It's got 'her' right there. 😀

I could never wrap my head around assigning gender to a robot (or race, or sexual orientation all of which I've seen happen in the geek community at one time or another).  Even watching Transformers as a kid I wondered what purpose do red lips, wide hips and a chest in the general shape of boobs on Arcee serve?  It's.........it's a robot.

It's not a robot thing, it's a human thing to personalize everything we interact with.  Your dog has no clue about gender identity but you still talk to them with their 'proper' gender because it feels weird *to you* to call them 'it'.  Same thing happens to cars and ships and robots.  Sue looks to be the first one to assign it as a 'he'.  This snippet even has a joke alluding to Torch being replaced on the show due to being licensed out separately.

One wonders why a smart guy like Reed would choose 'Humanoid' when the robot is very obviously not remotely human-shaped; and it seems logical he was working towards back-filling the 'H.E.R.B.I.E.' acronym after deciding he wanted the 'Herbie' name.  And what does the A-type version look like?

I like the costumes but I really do not like that only two of them match. All four should match, or all four should be unique - two of the four matching just bugs me.

None of them match if you look closer.  Ben's hands are bare and the black line boot cuff shows he's got white pant cuffs above the boots; only he and Johnny have the sleeve stripes and Reed lacks the white collar.  Only Sue's outfit looks right and the others should match her; with Ben hopefully becoming barechested by the end of the flick, imho.

And boy, it sure would be nice to not have to pop between two different threads to follow a single movie conversation.

I kinda love that they aren't all the exact same uniform. Little variations are fine to give some individuality. It's clear they're all on the same team.

Same. I don't begrudge those who want the comic outfits made real, but I like it when the team members of any superhero unit have their own uniform. It's partly why I never liked those blue and yellow uniforms the X-Men are sometimes depicted in.

@enigmaticclarity The Waid/'Ringo run is one of my all time favorite comic book runs. Love the art, was so sad when Wieringo died.

It's hard to really discern how anyone is gonna be from a teaser trailer. I don't mind new takes on characters, especially if it's just a cosmetic thing. So Reed has a mustache? Okay, cool. As long as he can convincingly give us Reed Richards, I don't really mind what Pedro looks like. Especially if this is some alternate universe- Reed in a lot of ways is the mirror to Tony. If this universe doesn't have a Tony Stark, then seeing Reed fill that gap makes a lot of sense, both visually and character-wise. Same with Thing- I actually like more of a differentiation between his human side and his more aggressive combat side. He's the opposite of the Hulk- he's the gentle giant. Yeah, a bit of a grump even before the accident, but that's the whole point of Alicia- if you couldn't actually see him and only knew him from his personality, you'd think he's a total softie. Even still, one scene where he's cooking isn't really enough to show us his full personality; I'll reserve judgement until we see him more aggressive (which is where I can see the more gravelly voice coming in). We know Ebon can do that smarmy tough guy shtick. As much as I loved Chiklis in the role, I do think we could've benefitted from even more of the softer side of him. I have every faith that these actors can pull off the roles, or else they wouldn't have gotten cast.

As for the mismatched uniforms, I kinda like them too. It almost subtly signifies rank to me- Reed has the least amount of white because he's the least "green" out of all of them- the most experienced in terms of science, whereas Johnny, as the youngest, is arguably the least experienced. Also a neat, sublte way to let their powers stand out a bit more- Reed's arms are blue, which would arguably stand out more (and I'd imagine be easier to animate in a believable way) than the long white arms. Ben's hands are exposed, hinting at his role as the bruiser, and letting us see more of the rocky Thing costume. And so on. I like the blue and white better than the black and blue costumes from the OG movies, I think. They're much more striking, and I think fit much more into that "nuclear American ideal" vibe that they're going for- blue and white just gives off that "all-American ideal", like Cap's old blue and red costume did. You know they're going to get more matching uniforms at some point in the future- either at the end of this movie, or for future appearances, so I'm not too bothered by it.

Especially glancing at my MCU Legends shelf- there's not a whole lot of white, so they're really gonna pop. I can't wait to see what the lineup is like, and if Thing is a single release or if he's the BAF for the wave. I'm sure they probably won't show off the figures for quite a while, at least as long as we don't know what Reed's powers look like. I could be wrong, but I'd imagine Disney wants to show off the powers via a trailer before a figure.

@enigmaticclarity The Waid/'Ringo run is one of my all time favorite comic book runs. Love the art, was so sad when Wieringo died.

Sad that he died, and also sad that Bill Jemas broke their run up due to an ego conflict with Mark Waid.  Jemas can kiss my backside forever since it's now impossible to right the wrong since Wieringo died a few years later.

I've heard good things about the Dan Slott run from recent years, but I haven't read it yet.

The Waid/Ringo Fantastic Four was the first time I enjoyed the FF in a loooooong time.    I was an avid fan during the Byrne years;  I tried again during Walt Simonson's stint - having adored Simonson's Thor - and while it was OK it wasn't his best work, but dropped the book immediately after.    When Waid took over as writer I was excited - I was familiar with his work from Flash which I enjoyed and Captain America which I loved.   His partnership with Ringo had worked well on Flash, and so seeing them together on FF was exciting.  And that run was definitely the best the team had been since the Byrne era for sure.    I honestly have picked up a few FF books here and there since.   I tried Hickman's FF but couldn't get into it - though I've heard from others it was good.    Still I'm in the camp with EC that the Waid/Ringo pairing on FF is top notch.    The Byrne run is still my favorite,  though, simply because that's where I came in and learned to like the team.   I already liked Thing as a fan of Marvel Two In One.

Also a huge Waid/Wieringo FF fan here. That run is in my top 10 all-time favorites. Mark Waid's treatment of the characters is published in the back of the Omnibus Vol 1 that I have, and it's become my definitive guide to understanding the FF. Hoping the writers had a copy of it going in to this movie.

I read and enjoyed the Hickman run. I read it as part of a speed read of basically all Hickman's Marvel stuff leading up to Secret Wars, so it's a bit of a blur along with everything else. And then somehow I managed to not actually read Secret Wars at the end of it - I guess I burned myself out.

Anyone wanting to experience Vanessa Kirby being awesome watch the movie "About Time."

That's one I will probably watch, and have wanted to for a while.

not letting Johnny speak in the trailer worries me

He actually does...

I also wish Marvel had held this until the Superbowl and had faith in it making a splash.

I get that, but supposedly there IS a superbowl ad for this, and Thunderbolts.

Before he was announced as Johnny, Quinn was my pick for a multiversal, young Tony Stark to be the main Iron Man after, presumably, Secret Wars compresses all realities into one. I saw a resemblance to a young RDJ in face as well as energy.

I know it really bothers you, and part of me totally gets it, but most people are only in one or the other. This thread is titled "movie and legends", so it's not outlandish. It's gonna be okay. I'm also discussing it in two text chains and another website.

I'm sure there's gotta be some comics where their uniforms weren't completely uniform. It's clearly an active choice by the filmmakers.

Same! I think it was Uncanny 275 or so? When everyone had the same suit on, and it just looked really wrong. Especially Wolverine, Jubilee, Storm, Psylocke, and Gambit. And I don't even like Gambit.

Well your dog doesn't need to have a clue about their gender to clearly have one so I don't see why your dog wouldn't be considered a he or a she.  There are male dogs and female dogs for the purposes of procreation, same as humans.  They reproduce, they nurse their young.  Robots don't do that.  Someone builds them.  So in the case of Transformers, at least, where most of them are humanoid shape--a head, a torso, two arms, two legs--I wonder why have "male" and "female".  Arcee isn't going to give birth with those wider hips and she's not going to nurse with her......aerodynamic chest.  It's weird to me.

Now those non humanoid bots, HERBIE ("he" according to the above comic), R2D2 ('he") or even the starship Enterprise ("she"), I guess I chalk that up to human idiosyncrasy.  If I call my car "boy" for some reason and the next owner calls it "girl' neither of us are wrong.  We're just doing a weird human thing.

The point is that the human is choosing the term for the *human's* benefit/ease.

There are male dogs and female dogs for the purposes of procreation, same as humans.  They reproduce, they nurse their young.

And all this goes into your reasoning for using 'he/her' for your dog?  Do you stop using those terms once they're neutered/spayed?  Do you think we humans use gendered terms for ships and cars (and guns and swords and rail cannons and...) because they fuck?
