This is part 2 to the last LEGO review I did: Dol Guldur Ambush. At the end of this review I will show you how you combine these two sets together, but first let’s go over this larger set. When Gandalf and Radagast visit the ruins of Dol Guldur they have a surprise waiting for them in the form of the Necromancer and Azog. The set comes with six minifigures and seven action features.
First up with have Gandalf the Grey and Radagast the Brown. Gandalf we have seen a bunch of times in the Hobbit and Lord of the Ring sets, so it is nothing really new. Radagast, on the other hand, is making his LEGO debut with this set, and he does not disappoint. His hat-and-beard piece is just perfect. His beard is so perfect that it even has bird poop on it. These guys are also the only two figures in this set with two faces: one angry and one happy. With Gandalf, it’s hard to tell which face you have showing, but luckily Radagast’s beard allows you to see both faces. A wizard would not be a wizard without a staff and cloak, so of course both of these guys have them.
The other four figures are the baddies. First up we have two figures that we saw with the Ambush set. The only difference is these two Gundabad Orcs do not come with hair pieces.
Next up is the Necromancer; he is a very plain solid black figure, with a little bit of detail for his face and chest. I do not believe we have seen him in the new Hobbit movies, so this may not be 100 percent correct, but I find it a bit boring.
I saved the best for last: Azog!! This guy does not have a standard minifigure head. He has a fully sculpted head piece that slides down over his chest a bit. So that means his head cannot turn, but I don’t care, he still looks amazing! He also has his claw hand just like in the movie.
The main part of the set looks like a blown-up version of the ruins piece from the Ambush review. It makes a great backdrop for your Hobbit minifigures.
On top of the tower there is a single-peg plate that allows you to attach either a small catapult or a hanging cage that holds a skeleton inside. The cage also has a pin you can pull out to make the cage drop on your foes below. The nice part of this is either piece can be displayed on its own or on the tower.
On the opposite side, there is a vine that, when turned, sets off a skull-dropping trap. Also, there is a black gate you can open and close. In the middle of the set, there is a wall that you can spin to show the hiding Necromancer. A large spider web blocks the last doorway, which can be flipped up, but watch out for the hidden blade trap!
The last extra set piece is a very cool-looking statue with a base that opens to show a hidden wizard’s ring.
In the last review I showed you two prongs, and now I will show you where to attach the Ambush set to the Battle set. Once it’s plugged in, there is no way to tell it’s two different sets. I have always been a fan of combining two sets to make one larger set.
So if you are buying the Battle set, there is no reason not to get the smaller Ambush set. Dol Guldur Battle retails for $69.99, but it comes with four good minifigures and two AMAZING minifigures, some great play features, and a great display setup. Only thing that could have made these two sets better would have been some dwarfs, but dwarfs make everything better!
