Funko Legacy – Game of Thrones Hound

Hound_01Funko Legacy is a line of highly detailed, super-articulated 6-inch scale action figures.  Fans got their first taste of the Legacy line at Barnes and Nobles stores last week with the release of six figures from the Game of Thrones Legacy line.  We took some quick pics last week, but I’m having too much fun and thought I’d take a closer look at some of the figures, starting with Sandor Clegane, The Hound.

Hound_02I suppose I should say a quick word about where I’m coming from as a fan of this particular license.  I love the show Game of Thrones and I’ve been reading the books after the seasons air, so I’m not exactly up to date on all of the plot points of the book series.  So far Clegane is one of the more interesting characters to me.  He’s clearly not a hero and has done awful things, but he seems to have a sense of decency that most of the “noble” individuals in that world lack.  He seems downright saintly compared to some!

Accessories

The Hound comes with a removable helm, two swords, and a scabbard that can be placed on his belt.  The belt scabbard is one thing you’ll want to be careful with because it’s a tight fit and if you put too much tension on the belt loops they will pop off his belt.  That happened with mine, but I was able to fix easily with some superglue.

The two swords are beautiful and deadly looking and are cast in a stiff plastic that holds it’s shape well.  The highlight accessory here is the hound-shaped helm.  This thing is executed perfectly.  First, the sculpt is sharp and detailed and looks exactly like hammered metal from the show.  It’s cast in a very thin, flexible plastic that allows it to actually move and allow for full head movement.  The helm is hinged, so Clegane can flip it up or down depending oh his needs.

Sculpt

The sculpts in this line are quite good. All the armor and clothing have great, sharp detail and nice textures.  I love all the dents and scrapes on the armor bits.  A big part of the sculpt is likeness to the actor.  I think this looks very much like the actor, but there are a couple things that harm the impact of the sculpt.

Hound_29For instance, the right eyebrow is painted normally and it ruins the effect of the subtle sculpting of the burns on the right side of the Hound’s face.  The hair also covers up a little more of the burns on the figure than usually seen in the show.

Hound_22I also think the burns on his face are just a little too subtly sculpted and don’t quite stand out as much as you would think.  The head is also a tad small, probably in order to accommodate wearing the helm, but I think that’s a fair trade-off.

Hound_23One weird thing I don’t like is that his hands are fused shut, so you can’t get one of the swords in there very easily.

Hound_24Articulation

The articulation breakdown is as follows:

  • Ball-jointed neck and waist
  • Swivel-hinged hips, shoulders, elbows, ankles
  • Double-hinged knees
  • Swivel wrists and thighs

Hound_25The articulation allows for impressive movement for a character so large and bulky.  They have used soft plastic for the armored skirt, elbow pads, shoulder pads (I’m sure there is a technical armory name for these bits, but I don’t know them), and hair to allow full range of motion on the nearby joints.  Seated and horse-riding poses are no issue.

Hound_26Paint

The paint is very impressive on these figures for the most part.  I mentioned the eyebrow issue earlier, but other than that it’s very well done, especially on the armor which has a great metallic paint with washes to bring out the detail.  The stippled brown paint on the face is pretty effective in conveying Clegane’s scruffy beard.

Hound_27Caution

As you may have heard, people have had issues with stuck joints and breakage in this line so far.  My Hound had a stuck ankle and a stuck elbow that I was able to free with the application of a little heat.

Hound_30I use a hot water bath to free up the joints.  I would advise using caution upon opening the figures in this wave by gently testing articulation points for frozen points before making large movements.  The articulation feels solid and holds position well once I got those stuck joints moving.

Hound_31Overall

Overall, I’d say this is an extremely effective representation of the character in this scale.  Even if you don’t care about Game of Thrones, it might be worth a look for fans of super-articulated figures in general as just a cool medieval knight.  Just be careful with those joints when you first crack open the figure.
