Calvin and Hobbes is one of the greatest comic strips ever. Calvin is the boy everyone wants to be, and Hobbes is the friend we all need. Every so often something comes along that shows the capacity for depth in a couple of panels of deceptively simple artwork and a handful of well-placed dialogue bubbles. Bill Watterson is second only to Charles Schultz in effectively translating a child’s perspective into universal terms that transcend the inherent boundaries of the medium. In short, it’s a masterpiece, and that’s not overselling it. This hardcover collection of the entire run of Calvin and Hobbes is one of my favorite possessions, with great reproduction and an eye-pleasing shelf presence. This is the perfect vehicle to read the entirety of this much-missed strip. Good for adults, good for children, good for anybody who has ever been young and remembers that time.
