When you mush two things together, you get something twice as cool as the two things separate. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups taught us all that a long time ago. The same holds true for barbarians and skeletons.
I like Boss Fight’s stuff, I like barbarians and I like Skeletons. I guess technically that’s three things, but this is a toy site, not a math site, so you’ll probably have to grade it on a curve. I wanted to try out one of Boss Fight’s Epic HACKS Skeletons, and of the four initial offerings, the barbarian skeleton was the one that jumped out and demanded a purchase. I’ve already preordered the wave 2 cowboy skeleton because that just seems neato, and ding dang dong it after fiddling around with this do I want to get the rest of wave 1.
In order to line up with their 4 inch scale HACKS line, this skeleton is technically supposed to be an oversized skeleton warrior from. That’s a clever way to not only add to people’s existing 1/18th scale collection, but also draw in another field of collector by having it just happen to line up with 6 inch figures as well.
Regardless of how you use it, the figure itself is a lot of fun. It looks great, with a nice, muted bone color to the skeleton itself. The paint on the helmet, vest, boots and loincloth is clean, with some leather, copper and silver accents.
The articulation works quite well. He has a ball jointed head with a hinged mouth, single-jointed elbows, double-jointed knees, ball-jointed wrists and ankles, and similarly jointed hips that get a very nice lateral spread. There’s a small range of twist at the bottom of the spin, but no upper torso articulation that I can see. I’d like to have had some kind of ribcage articulation like a balljoint, but otherwise he moves well.
The ball-jointed wrists in particular give him a good range for his various weaponry.
For accessories, the skeleton comes with three weapons: an axe, a mace and a sword. The grips on the hands were quite tight, so it took a bit of finagling to get them in the grip, but they held well. There’s a slot on his back for his sword to slide into. Again, the ball-jointed wrists help him in posing.
He comes with a pair of skeleton feet that you can swap on if you want him to have a more stripped-down look. I didn’t do it, because it take a bit of work, but I believe you can remove all of his clothing if you want a completely nude skeleton.
