Mezco: One:12 Collective Spider-Man: Homecoming Tech Suit Review

This has truly been a long time coming. And it does feel good, at long last, to have a One:12 Movie Spider-Man make his way home. My home.

It’s pretty wild to think I’ve had this fella on preorder since 2017. Mezco’s preorder time has often become the stuff of legend, But this one ran longer than I think any of us expected- with some good reason, as there were modifications made to the base body- but as is customary, it comes down to “was it worth the wait?”

After getting a chance to really play with the figure, instead of just smile at it on the shelf or looking at pretty pictures, I’m going to say yes. There you go, five-cent review complete.

A lot of folks were a little sideways on the Mezco comic Spidey and honestly, I was not one of them. I freaking love that figure, in ways and for reasons that I’m not sure would make sense to anyone but me. But, of course, I like the new (to 2017) costume, like Tom Holland’s take on the character, and so I was in on getting a movie figure. But I didn’t NEED this figure like some folks did, if that makes sense.

So a lot of what makes this Spidey unique is that new body he shares with the “Homemade Suit” exclusive. It reminds me a lot of a 3A body in terms of size, but with that beefier Mezco QC and joints. Articulation-wise, this is the Spidey to beat- double joints all around, butterfly shoulders, double abdominal and neck joints, and the range to make it all work. It’s almost enough for me to want a comic Spidey re-do –and definitely a re-do for Miles.

Having the benefit of the movie running in the background as I’m writing, I can now say with even more confidence that Mezco did a stellar job recreating the suit. Now, at first blush, I thought his waist rode a little high- but as I watch Spidey climb up the Washington Monument in my peripheral, I think it’s damn close to where it should be. The textures are fantastic, the colors are spot-on, and the transitions from plastic to cloth are so clean, I doubt even Robo would give it a second glance.

Accessories are pretty standard for Spidey Mezco figures, with the assortments of sprayed and benible webs, as well as the hands to work them. My only gripe there would be the singular gripping hand, but there’s enough options to make it work for most poses. A kind-of surprise inclusion, at least for me, is how cool the “web-wing” effect works and looks. Now personally, I would generally prefer a soft removeable cape-like piece. But this looks sooo good on the figure, especially with the stand parts.

The headsculpts are a great selection, allowing for some subtle changes in expression from the iconic wide-eyed look to the slits of Ditko era. Obviously the movie gives these expressions a mechanical “real world” function, but for us it just means fun with pictures. Each head has super clean paint applications, and the glossy lens textures of the eye pieces are really impressive, especially up close. The only shame here is that unless you picked up the “Homemade Suit,” you were denied this excellent Tom Holland Peter headsculpt. And that is a true shame, as it looks amazing on the ‘Tech Suit.”

So now that we actually have the makings of a Marvel Cinematic set in One:12, you probably want to know how he stacks up. And I would say pretty swell. He’s obviously the same size as the “Homemade,” and he feels appropriately slim next to Black Panther. Hell, I think he sizes up next to comic Parker in good way, like an Ultimates kinda setup. And in the age of Spiderverse, why not, right? Like most Spideys, I’m always drawn to having them brawl it out with the big guys; Venom, Juggernaut, and so on. And this Spidey is no exception.

So, if the previous version wasn’t quite right for you, this one has the size and the extra range that maybe didn’t kinda hit you right on that one. If you’re like me though, and liked your current Spidey just fine, don’t play with this one for more than like a minute tops. Because then you’ll want it anyway. And here’s hoping now that Miles is a superstar, he can get a new figure based on this fantastic one. Thanks Mezco!
