Four Horsemen Studios: Mythic Legions Advent of Decay Morgolyth

Advent of Decay adds quite a few new faction leaders to the mix with Kings, Queens, and Priestesses. I’m not sure why, but somehow in my piecemeal opening process, I’ve left all the leader I bought for last. Today we’re going to take a look at the High Priestess and leader of the Congregation of Necronomicus, Queen of the Dead, Morgolyth!

Morgolyth comes in the standard packaging and her bio gives you a little character flavor as she’s leader of the Necronomicus faction along with her brothers Mandibulas and Malleus (I love these names), though it sounds like she’s the more calm and collected of the triumvirate.

Morgolyth comes with a cloth cape, removeable shoulder pads, a weapons strap, a knife with sheathe, a staff with a magic amulet at the top, a regular sword, a gigantic “buster” sword, and three wing attachment pieces.

The knife is a sweet little weapon with a nicely ornate sheathe that has a clip on the back. It clips securely on the strap or even to the armor at the hips. It doesn’t quite want to jam all the way down into the sheath, however.

The cape is a soft material that hangs well. I’m still not sure about how it’s supposed to be installed, but there are four holes in the top of the cape and you can peg it onto the figure using the shoulder pads.

The regular sword is a solid accessory, not too flashy, but a good weapon to have and one of the few included that seems designed for the smaller female hand sculpts.

The staff is something we’ve seen before in the original weapons pack, but is perfect for a character like this. I imagine as High Priestess, it’s a lot less about sword fighting and stabbing and more about sitting about on thrones, gesturing commands and working spells with a giant staff.

The buster sword is an impressive sculpt, to be sure, and I love all the detail in the etched lettering and almost organic hilt shape. It’s a little big for the strap and the hilt stretches out the figure’s hand a bit, but I imagine she magics that bad boy out of thin air when she needs it rather than carry it around like a common sellsword.

I really appreciate the wing holder piece for this figure because I have appropriate skeletal wings for her to use and she looks pretty rad with them attached.

The sculpt is a lot of re-use from the skeleton warriors we looked at a while back, but she has a great, unique, upper torso with a metallic rib-cage armor motif that sets her apart.

Not that she needed it, because her massive ornate headdress takes care of that perfectly and evokes a demonic, but religious feel. It reminds me a little of the enlarged crown of the old Alien queen from ALIENS in a way.

I also like that the neck is more skeletal than the skeleton soldiers from this wave. I did have an issue where my figure’s neck was broken in the package, but it was an easy fix to super-glue it back on.

The articulation is Mythic Legions standard with:

  • Ball and socket head and mid-torso
  • Swivel/hinge hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles
  • Swivel waist

The paint is good. I like the weathering they used on the skeleton parts and the metallic purple is very pretty.

Overall, Morgolyth is very good and looks excellent commanding my skeleton legion.
