Bandai: S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball Z Broly (Event Exclusive)

Holy Moley this is a monster chunk of plastic. Rarely does something this majestic come across my desk for review! I missed out on the first release of Bandai’s S.H. Figuarts Broly way back in 2014 and then again in 2016 and I thought I would miss out again, but I got lucky!

First a bit of history. Broly history. Because Robo might not know about Broly. Broly is the legendary Saiyan that made his first appearance in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan that released way back in 1993. Anyone else feel old? Broly is the legendary Super Saiyan that all the Saiyans fear. Actually everyone fears him and wants him dead. Goku drove him crazy as a baby (Goku had a case of colic) and Broly has a mad on to beat Goku to a pulp. Goku eventually beats Broly and that’s that. Or is it, Broly keeps showing up in various forms, which should surprise no one since no one really dies in Dragon Ball.

The figure is ginormous. I mean this is just a monster chunk of plastic. And it’s layers of plastic, and heavy, I mean for a non solid toy this thing is really heavy. It’s a beautiful sculpt and an excellent portrait of Broly, and when you think that Bandai can reissue it 4 years later and it still holds with the newer figures coming out, that’s pretty awesome.

Broly has a ton of articulation, pretty much all the standard S.H. Figuarts articulation scheme is packed into this obscenely large figure. And it all works! I mean yeah there are limitations due to the monstrosity of the sculpt, but you can pretty much get Broly to pose in every crazy position possible. There is one weakness in the articulation scheme, the joints are bit weak, they aren’t tight enough and can’t hold the weight. Mainly legs.

There are some extras in the box, energy balls, a stand, 2 sets of extra hands and some faces. They’re all ok and pretty standard for S.H. Figuarts, nothing special. The figure is really the prize.

This Event Exclusive Broly is sporting some different colours, I don’t remember the fun details but it’s like the hair is more green and the skirt is more maroon and the pants are little more off white.

I love monster chunks of plastic as much as I love colored translucent figures, making this a must have figure. Having missed out on it and deciding to skip the insane after-market on it I’m happy to have it in my hands. And you should be too. If you can find him. Good luck.
