Hasbro: Marvel Legends Magik

I skipped The Book of Vishanti SDCC exclusive and have regretted missing out on Magik and Hela ever since. Fortunately for me, Walgreens picked up an exclusive version of Magik for their store and I was able to find one late last week! Let’s take a look at the Walgreens exclusive Magik!

Magik comes in the regular Marvel Legends packaging with a Walgreens Exclusive sticker on the window , a nice drawing of Magik on the sides, and swell picture on the back. The window shows off the figure and the plethora of accessories well.

Magik comes with a massive translucent yellow sword, a smaller translucent blue sword, a blue flame effect for that sword, two smaller blue energy swirl effects, a lightning power effect, a translucent red Ghost Rider skull, a translucent red version of Lockheed, and a spell casting hand. Phew.

The red Lockheed is kind of fun, I’m not sure if it’s a specific comic reference for a time when Lockheed turned red, but I took it as a Limbo demon companion for Magik. It balances on her arm and shoulder fairly easily and has a little bit of paint with black horns and a gold overspray.

I think the flaming skull is supposed to represent a spell, perhaps? It’s neat looking, though I wouldn’t put in on her body as it’s comically overlarge.

The swirling energy effects look like blue versions of the effect that came with Vision and Scarlet Witch two-pack. I like to use them on the arm she holds the blue sword with.

The Lightning effect looks to be from the Thor Ragnarok figure. It’s really soft plastic, so you have to shove it down on the arm a ways to keep it from bending, but looks nice lit up with blue lights and works well with the spell casting hand.

The blue sword is really nice and feels a little closer in style to the soul sword I’m used to. The hilt is painted metallic gray and I like that it’s long enough for Magik to hold two-handed.

I also like the way the energy effect from Psylocke works on this sword as it gives it a more magical feel.

The sword is a really soft plastic, but by some miracle is staying pretty straight so far.

The soulsword got a bit of an upgrade at some point in the comics, and now it reminds me of Guts’ sword from Berserk. It’s not really my version of Magik or the Soulsword, but it looks kinda neat with the guard design mimicking her Kirby-esque headdress.

The sculpt is nice and matches pretty well with the artwork I’ve seen of this version of Magik. She looks like the same figure from the Vishanti pack for the most part, but with the boots from Nico Minoru which helps get closer to the comic design.

I especially like the sculpting on her left armored arm. It’s got a really thick, textured plate armor that suggests molten steel or some sort of creature scales. The spikes are pretty sharp for a mass market toy too.

The head sculpt is very nice and I like how the hair frames her face and goes over her shoulders a bit, but still allows for some good head movement. The articulation is the standard for Marvel Legends female figures except she’s missing the neck hinge. The ankles were a little loose and the plastic is a little soft in the limbs  which made posing less fun.

The paint is minimal as she is mostly cast in black plastic. The silver on the buckles and straps and the overall face paint looks very good and I like the two tones in the hair. The only paint issue I see is that the cleavage window in her costume isn’t very precisely painted and there is some black where it should be flesh tone.

Overall, I’m really pleased with this figure and glad I waited since I think I like this version a bit more than what was released in the book of Vishanti. It’s not really my Magik, I’m more into the old-school, black and yellow New Mutants uniform look, but this is enough fun to make me forget that. I enjoyed futzing with all the energy effects to find my preferred set up.
