1000TOYS: 1/12 Scale ROBOX Black Review

100Toys has a few traveling convention exclusives including black and canvas white versions of their basic 1/12 Scale ROBOX. Based on the designs of Korean artist Kim Jung Ji, this robot transforms from a boxy carrying mode to a super-articulated Robot equipped with guns and a riot shield. Let’s take a look!

When I saw Pab’s review of the basic ROBOX, I knew I had to get one. SDCC is a great time to pick up 1000Toys figures because you can save on shipping, so I ended up grabbing one of the exclusive black variants.

The figure comes packaged in the same box as the basic which features a small window box view of bot and a really neat illustration from Kim Jung Ji. Man, I really want that little robot dog too.

The figure actually comes a little less assembled than I was expecting. You have to add the little eye lenses to the head with some glue. I expect the purpose is to make it easier for customizing as this figure seems to be set up to be customized.

It’s a simple procedure. The trickier bit that I haven’t tried yet is actually adding decals. It looks to me like they are water slide decals.

There is also a pretty hefty set of instructions to help you transform him.

The figure comes with two guns and a riot shield. The blast effects I use in some of the photos were mine.

The box mode can attach the riot shield on the back. I kind of picture this as the transport mode so that the robot owners can easily transport and disembark large numbers of bots easily. Kind of like Episode I Battle Droids, but cooler.

The articulation is very nice and allows for an extensive amount of posing. The shoulders are especially nice in that they hinge up and down and forward and backward at the body and in the shoulder itself.  He has:

  • Ball jointed head and ankles
  • Swivel/hinged shoulders, elbows, knees, wrists, and hips
  • Double hinged knees and elbows
  • Hinged neck, toes, and claws
  • Swivel biceps

The only articulation point I missed in the abs are a mostly solid piece.

The guns and the shield can attach to the arms and legs at peg holes. The shield can also attach to the back.

Overall, this is a very cool robot toy. If it wasn’t so pricey, I’d definitely build a whole army of these little guys. He scales nicely with Marvel Legends and Star Wars Black.

This version seems more set up for customizers because it’s plain plastic and has no decals or weathering. I think I’ll try and put on some the decals at some point when I’m feeling more ambitious. Unfortunately, this is a traveling show exclusive but the basic version is still available for order at BBTS.
