Hasbro: Marvel Legends Captain America and Crossbones

I’m back with more Marvel Legends, this time featuring Captain America and Crossbones from Captain America: Civil War. I really enjoyed the character of Crossbones from the Captain America movies, so I was really looking forward to this set. Let’s take a look!

The packaging is the new MARVEL STUD10S standard featuring a lot of text.

The set comes with Crossbones, Cap, two extra unmasked heads, Cap’s shield, and Crossbones’ gauntlets.

The shield seems like a re-use of the previous Cap shields, but it has a nice glossy paint job. The body is re-use that has been released several times, but it’s an effective body with good articulation and solid bulk to him.

The real highlight of this figure is the heads. At first blush, I thought the masked head was also re-used, but it appears to be a more complicated piece composed of two separate pieces so that the mask actually looks more like an actual helmet.

The paint is very precise and utilizes the face printing tech well. I also like how the A on the helmet is a raised sculpt piece. The other head is maskless and quite a nice likeness for Chris Evans. The face printing works really well here too.

It’s night and day when compared to previous unmasked heads, but I do think it’s slightly too large and the neck is slightly too long. The head also doesn’t have any ball and socket movement due to how far you have to shove it down on the neck.

I can’t find my Winter Soldier or First Avenger Caps, but here he is with some of the others. The head socket is a little too small to fit on the Avengers neck. The figure does not come with the pointing finger or saluting hand, but if you have it from the previous releases they fit on this figure.

While the face printing is really nice here, they do some kind of printing for the highlights in the hair. It works pretty well when it matches the sculpt, but it’s a little distracting where it contrasts with the direction of the hair sculpt.

Overall, it’s a great update to an already good figure that’s only spoiled by the fact that I’ve bought about 90 percent of this figure three times previously. It’s one of the perils of collecting I’ve grown used to, but it’s still a little annoying.

Crossbones, on the other hand, looks to be 100% new sculpt and it’s all really quite nice.

His weapons are made from a fairly soft plastic and were a little warped in the package, but were straightened out with a little heat.

The unmasked head has some impressive scars and a nice face print. The five o’clock shadow is the best I’ve seen on a figure this scale. The sculpt of the body is chock full of cool armor and weaponry sculpts. The chest armor has a couple tabs on the right side that allow you to pry off the armor, though I’d think you would need to heat it in order to pull it off. What’s under there is plain and not intended to be without covering.

The masked head is pretty cool because they use two pieces and there is detailed eyes underneath the outer mask. Both heads seem slightly small to my eye, but still really great.

The paint is pretty minimal, but the face printing works well on both heads and there appears to be a print of some kind making the skull and crossbones on the costume.

Articulation is nice with the following POA:

  • Ball and socket head and mid-torso
  • Hinged neck
  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, hips, ankles, and wrists
  • Double hinged knees, and elbows
  • Swivel biceps and thigh

The articulation moves well for the most part, though the vest hinders the mid-torso joint a bit. The gauntlets are removeable, though he looks a little plain without them and the hands are designed to hold them.

Overall, I’m really happy with this set. It does burn a bit to add another Cap to the pile, but it is an improved Cap, so I can live with it. I may try and dremel out the unmasked head sculpt so it can sit a bit lower.
