We’re continuing our look at the latest Black Series exclusives with the Toys R Us Jedi Training Rey with Crait base. This figure is an update of the previously released SDCC Exclusive and wave one Black Series figure with soft goods, a base, and some die-cast accessories. Let’s take a look!
Rey comes packaged in a fairly large box with a very nice illustration on the front and a front flap that opens to show the figure nicely in a large window.
The set comes with Rey, her staff, a die-cast blaster, a die-cast saber hilt, a regular plastic saber with removable blade and two-piece base.
The accessories are familiar and the die-cast is kind of unique, but I think plastic painted silver is just as effective. I don’t like that the pistol doesn’t have a hole at the trigger guard, so Rey doesn’t hold it well.
The base is kind of fun because it has a big engine chunk that has been blasted off and dug into the blood red sands of Crait. The sculpting is nice and it conveys the idea of disturbed rock well, but I think the color fails it a bit in that it looks a little more watermelon than blood red. There is one peg and the figure fits on it well.
The base is actually two pieces that are loosely interlock at a hole in the piece with the engine.
The sculpt is pretty familiar if you have the SDCC or Wave 1 version, but the belt and torso pieces are different in order to accommodate soft goods skirt and robe. The robe bit is a little prone to fraying and the strips feel a little too thick. Unfortunately due to the fraying, I’m a little nervous to adjust them too much.
The paint is an improvement in that there is a good wash on the arm wraps and the belt sash is the correct darker color.
The face paint is a definite improvement as she has a less of a scared look to her face and the skin tone is a bit more natural. I do like that she also has a little bit of battle damage on her right shoulder.
The articulation isn’t really hampered by the skirts, so that’s nice, but her hairdo does limit head movement a bit. The articulation is Black Series standard:
- Ball-and-socket mid-torso
- Swivel/hinge neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, ankles, and wrists
- Double-hinged knees
- Swivel thighs
I have mixed feelings about this set. I really like the base and the new paints, but I don’t think the shoulder wrap/robe is as effective as the sculpted version.
