Kamala Khan is one of many new young adult characters to grace the pages of Marvel comics, one that I look forward to reading about in my Marvel Unlimited subscription. Kamala Khan is the new Ms Marvel, and Hasbro’s Marvel Legends action figure is a great version of the character.
As a comic book reader I love comic characters that are evergreen — they never age and just stay the same. But I also love change. During the ’80s when DC ran their Crisis on Infinite Earths, a number of staple characters died or retired and their mantle was passed to the next generation. New stories were told, legends created. In 1999 the Justice Society of America relaunched and further passing of torches was done. It was one of the greatest events for me as a comic book reader.
Recently, Marvel has been passing the torch for many characters, and once again I’m enjoying reading these stories. I can only imagine the challenge that writers have in making these stories, but Ms Marvel has been a joy to read. Her own title is fun as she navigates her teen-dom as the daughter of Pakistani immigrants, as a teenager and as a teen who’s been given powers as a new generation of Inhuman. And, of course, she’s decided to take on the mantle of one of her favorite heroes, Ms Marvel, which leads to some great conversations between the two. She also had appearances in Avengers and in Champions, and I continue to find her development engaging.
The Marvel Legends figure is a great tribute to an amazing character. The base figure is one we’ve seen used multiple times on the Spider-Girls; it’s a great, solid teen-sized buck. There is a new head sculpt, and the armband is new, along with the scarf and the skirt. Everything fits well together, captures the character, and looks great on the shelf.
She is fully articulated; however, the the shirt does inhibit the hip movement.
Ms Marvel comes with Sandman BAF parts and has extra embiggened hands. The embiggened hands could use some swivels as they could use some more movement. I wish she came with more embiggened parts or maybe Hasbro could just release an upscaled version of her, Civil War Ant-Man-sized. But I’d be satisfied with some embiggened legs.
The verdict is difficult on this one. She is a modern character, and if you are classic Marvel Legends collector, then this isn’t the figure. If you are stuck in your childhood for you comic characters, then this isn’t for you. But, if you are like me, and you embrace change, then this is the figure for you. This is a good, solid action figure of a new character embracing a classic mantle.
