What I thought were going to be two of my favorites from the new X-Men Legends Warlock wave didn’t end up being the case at all. But in an assortment this strong, even the second and third favorites are amazing pieces of plastic. Sunfire and Polaris are strong in their own rights, just not the pick of the litter.
Don’t get me wrong, out of all the potential team builders of this wave, these two were my top ones. I would cut off my right arm for a Giant-Size X-Men team with a new Nightcrawler and Banshee, and finally a Thunderbird. And Polaris is just one of those classic cool characters that needs Havok and other X-Factor team members (or in this case, even the Starjammers.) But maybe I had my expectations too high?
Surely not. Not me.
These are great figures. But the slight awkwardness caused by a little looseness in Lorna’s knees knocks her down a peg, along with some color differences in the costume from top to bottom. And big flesh paint splotch on the right hip. But I love this costume. It has the “Astonishing” effect, where a classic costume is updated while keeping true to the original. That’s my jam, completely.
But Shiro, I can’t explain it. This is my first experience with the new body first introduced with Spider-Man 2099 and I love it. It’s Bucky Cap body height with less mass and musculature. It has an amazing amount of movement in the shoulders but the elbows are lacking. Overall, though, I really like the body. The head is a great sculpt, something I’ve never been able to pull off with customs in the past. This can pass as both a classic X-Men or a modern Uncanny Avengers version, so both sides should be satisfied.
So why am I left with an empty feeling? Is it because he’s missing his teammates? Will I feel better when the two-pack classic Cyclops comes out? Maybe a tiger stripe Wolverine? I really like the figure, but it leaves me wanting more, more than the others in this wave. It’s because I’m X-Men through and through while X-Force, Jim Lee, and New Mutants held my interest less than the core group. I NEED more classic X-Men, and Sunfire is just a tease.
