Comicave Studios: Iron Man 3 Igor

Iron Man 3 Igor Comicave Studios figure review - trademark pose

Thanks to Iron Man 3, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that just keeps on giving, figure companies haven’t lacked for variants of the movie’s main hero. Anyone else excited about what that could possibly mean once Spider-Man enters the fold come this May?

Iron Man 3 Igor Comicave Studios figure review - front packageComicave Studios has been cranking out Iron Man 3 figures, including an Iron Patriot, War Machine and a sweet-looking Shotgun variant, but thanks to the gang at Bluefin, I was able to get a hold of the Igor figure. While Comicave wasn’t on my radar before, I’m definitely going to be putting them on my figure radar if they’ve got more offerings like this planned.

The packaging is fairly simplistic with a cool foil-type reflective material that offers some sense of Igor charging into battle. With a small magnet holding the front closed, you can open the “front door” to see the figure inside, but pulling the figure out from the top is when you’ll start to appreciate the size of a 75 percent die-cast metal figure.

Clocking in at about four pounds, this will be easily one of the heavier figures in your 6-inch collection.

Comicave isn’t the first to produce a figure based on Igor as Hasbro and Hot Toys have tried their hand at replicating one of the more unique armors Tony Stark unveiled at the house party scene. Probably due to the snazzy blue and silver paint job, as well as the distinct hunchback appearance, Igor stands out from its red and gold companion armors.

There’s a lot of great detailing in the figure from the various paneling, the excavator extensions, and the plated knees and shins as well as the exoskeleton spine. The detailing resembles what I always envisioned a smaller-scale suit of armor to look like and was a major highlight of the figure.

Iron Man 3 Igor Comicave Studios figure review - scale with Face Off Hulk and Iron ManFor those of you who haven’t plunked down for a Comicave figure before, here’s some incentive: they fit in perfectly with Marvel Legends. Igor is about 8 inches tall, good enough to look like a more super-suit for Tony, but still able to get beat down by the Hulk.

I mentioned this earlier, but I really loved the shade of blue used as it complements the silver perfectly. The white “camo” strips are appropriately not as neat and polished, and the lettering for the various parts is nice and sharp. The figure also has a nice amount of airbrushed dirt and grime to capture that caked-on dirt appearance.

Iron Man 3 Igor Comicave Studios figure review - right arm detailIgor surprisingly is more articulated than you might expect, with over 60 articulation points. That seemed about right to me after posing him around a bit. I was most impressed he could be posed in the traditional Iron Man landing pose.

Igor has the following articulation points:

  • Neck (ball-jointed)
  • Shoulders (ball-jointed)
  • Biceps
  • Elbows
  • Wrist
  • Abdomen
  • Torso
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Ankles

Iron Man 3 Igor Comicave Studios figure review - trademark poseOn the accessory front, Igor comes with two extra sets of hands: a grabbing pair and a repulsor set complete with articulated fingers. Switching them out was only tricky with the articulated finger set as the right hand started to pry open. Hopefully superglue can fix it. The excavators extend a bit, but not as much as I’d like.

Helping to sell those still on the fence, Igor has a light-up head and Arc Reactor feature. Don’t worry about pulling off the head; it comes off easily enough and you don’t have to undo the figure more than that to find the switches, which is a plus. The lights are strong enough that you can see them well even in daylight.

Clocking in at $189, this is a luxury-priced 6-inch figure, but I don’t see folks having much to complain about once they start fiddling with it. This is a fun figure with top notch painting, heft (thanks to the alloy), articulation, and solid light-up features. Beyond the Hasbro version, Igor wasn’t cheap as the Hot Toys version started at $509. If money isn’t an issue, I’d strongly suggest picking it up. 1. I agree. $185 is a bit much for a six-inch (more like about 8″?) figure. But if there has to be one in the six-inch category at that price, it’s hard to argue that this one should be in the running for the spot. It looks like they have a six-inch Iron Man coming soon at $110 ($75 less than Igor).

  2. Just saw this beast a couple days ago. I’d never of Comicave before then, but I’m a sucker for die-cast so I’ll be having an interesting discussion with my wallet over the weekend.
