What’s that? The Unicorn Files? You know–a unicorn: something that doesn’t actually exist in the real world. Like, say, a female that’s into geek culture. The geek fan landscape (fanscape?) can sometimes appear so populated by men, that a lot of people assume lady geeks don’t actually exist. Thus, a lady geek = unicorn.

That’s a myth that’s getting thoroughly busted in recent years. There’s been a lot written about females in the fan community, but journalist and GeekGirlCon board member, Terra Clarke Olsen wanted to take it up a notch:

“Nate Watters (the photographer) and I have been photographing geeky women in their homes, creating a collection of beautiful photos, each as unique as the individual. Originally we wanted to create a photo exhibit, but then we realized that these photos and women’s stories should be shared with the rest of the community! So we’ve decided to launch a Kickstarter in the hopes that we can self-publish a photo book.”

The Kickstarter goes live today, and you can support it HERE.

“We aimed to capture a wide selection of women, from fans to people in the industry (such as Kelly Sue DeConnick). The photos represent them and what they love. Each woman and how they are shot is different…but the one common theme being that the photos are taken in their home (a safe space that is reflective of them). Each participant will have a bio and quote accompany their photo. In addition to the photographs, the book would also contain a location of short stories and essays from women in the community.”

Y’know, the common assumption here at The Fwoosh is that our readership is 99% male. But I know there are some women on our message boards. So, ladies, why not represent with a shout-out in the comments below? Let your voice be heard, and show that The Fwoosh isn’t just a boys’ club!
