Heads up, y’all! Hasbro’s first wave of 2015 Marvel Legends Spider-Man figures has started hitting store pegs. Up for your consideration today? Marvel Comics semi-defunct MC2 (Marvel Comics 2) Universe’s Spider-Girl herself, May “Mayday” Parker.
Created by writer Tom DeFalco and artist Ron Frenz, Mayday first appeared in February 1998’s “What if…” #105. The daughter of retired Spider-Man, Peter Parker, and Mary Jane Watson, Spider-Girl not only got her own title (based on overwhelmingly popular demand), but also launched the MC2 Universe, aka Earth-982 (thank you Wikipedia!)
Enough of the history lesson, though. Let’s get down to the business at hand…the figure itself. Mayday Parker is the Spider-Girl figure you’ve been waiting for all this time. Smaller in scale than the rest of the Marvel Legends line (even the other female figures) she’s everything you want in a Spider-Girl.
Is she articulate? Yes, she is. Everything twists, turns and rotates as much as you would expect a Spider-related figure, to. She’s decked out in Ben Reilly’s old costume, right down to the external web shooters and webbed thumb, index and pinky fingers (I never quite understood why they were made that way. Did Ben Reilly really take the time to decide that’s how we wanted the fingers of his costume to look?!?!)
Spider-Girl has nice, clean paint apps. What I’m particularly impressed with is her mask. Mayday’s sporting the big Spider-eyes, which I much prefer to the squinter versions. The spiderwebs on her costume are a little off, though, particularly around her neck. It by no means ruins the figure, mind you…but I gotta find something to complain about, ya’know? Gotta keep Hasbro honest, here. Make sure they keep striving to do better.
The only other real downside to Spider-Girl, is that she’s very light on accessories. I mean…very light. In fact, there are none. That is, if you don’t include all the Build-a-Figure parts she comes with. Mayday’s packed with a bunch of parts to make the Goblin, but if you don’t have any intention of building him, or not planning on getting all the figures in the line, then you do get a bit screwed in that way.
All in all, a nice solid outing for Hasbro. And if you’re a fan of Marvel’s just completed Edge of the Spider-Verse series, you’re definitely gonna want to stake out your local retail establishment for her.
