Well, we all know that Star Wars and Disney are all one big happy family now. Between the galaxy far, far away and Marvel Comics, Disney World is going to get crowded. However, long before the Lucas Film acquisition, Georgie boy and the Mouse were pretty close, and Disney World/Land has featured Star Wars in the parks for a while now, most notably in the “Star Tours” feature, and, for some time now, they have been taking advantage of this with action figures. Yep, Disney characters dressed as Star Wars characters in action figure form — that is merchandising at a whole other level, folks.
I have not been to a Disney park in ages after going to Disneyland pretty regularly as a kid, but I am headed to Disney World with my 2-year-old at the end of next month, and I assure you, she has no idea what her little mind is in for. However, Pabs took his family to Euro-Disney (is it still called that?) in Paris not long ago, and he picked up one of the Star Tours sets for me in the form of my two favorite little chipmunks — Chip and Dale. I have always loved these guys, from my very young days watching their original shorts to Rescue Rangers being my favorite hit of the Disney Afternoon.
However, I have never had a chance to have these little scraps in Star Wars attire, and this two-pack features them in appropriate Ewok duds. I mean, the Ewoks didn’t really wear all that much, but if you were going to choose characters for Chip and Dale to play dress-up as, it was going to be either them or maybe the Jawas. So, if you look a the card back, maybe they don’t look quite as “in character” as some of the other guys, like Micky and Donald, but the little hoods are convincing enough.
The set also includes a Stormtrooper helmet, which is not only appropriate for the Ewok costumes, but it is also the perfect thing to have for Chip and Dale. I can easily picture a Disney short featuring them in all kinds of antics with a trooper helmet. There is also a club for Dale and little spear for Chip with a satchel that doesn’t really fit well on the figures.
Due to the size and style of the figures, Chip and Dale only feature three points of articulation — at the neck and shoulders — but, really, I don’t think anyone would be expecting anything more than that. These are figures produced more for the novelty of the mash-up rather than being cutting edge on the articulation front. Their hands are sculpted to hold their weapons, but it can be a struggle as their C-grips are made of pretty soft plastic, so it takes a little effort to get them to hold them. Once you get it, though, they stay pretty well.
Finally, the paint on these is pretty minimal, and seeing it blown up, it looks kind of sloppy around the eyes. However, these guys are only about 2 inches tall, so it is certainly not as apparent in real life. Speaking of the paint, do you know which is Chip and which is Dale? Chip has the black nose and Dale the red, so if you did not know that before, you can say you learned something on the Fwoosh today.
Hey, these aren’t Marvel Legends or anything, but Ewok Chip and Dale are a lot of fun. As I said, this set is exclusive to Disney parks, but you can click the eBay link below. These guys are a part of series three, so there have been several previous offerings, but I am just going to go ahead and put them by my Black Series figures; the scale works out great and they can continue their adopted Ewok tradition of driving Han Solo nuts.
