Mego WGSH return w/50th Anniversary DC 8 inch figures!

Fri Dec 02, 2022 6:24 am

Surprised no one is talking about this. Mego 8 inch World’s Greatest Superheroes has returned with faithful retro reproductions of the DC characters. Figures are being found at Walmart and online at Amazon. First 8 are:

Superman
Batman
Robin
Aquaman
Shazam
Green Arrow
Green Lantern
Flash

Was so surprised to hear about and see these for the first time today. Prices range from $16 to $19.99 per figure, depending on the retailer. Just got a full set of all 8.

These were my first ever action figures! I had an original removable cowl Batman but I broke him while playing with him. I saw Batman, Robin and Superman at Walmart but didn't have enough on me to grab any. I went back this morning and they were all gone. Yeah I think I am going to have to jump down this rabbit hole probably. SIGH.

Unfortunately, I really don't think I'm going to be able to " go down the rabbit hole" on this like I'd love too..
These, like many of us were a favorite of mine from when I was 10..Nowhere near my first, I'd already played with and owned Marxs " Cheif Cherokee", and " Johnny West", ( cowboy and Indian) figures like GI Joe but made of a harder quality plastic with a million accessories ,then Captain Action with all of his multi,-disguises, Silver Streak and the like, G.I.Joe, so I was kinda late at the launch of The World's Greatest Super Heroes, but my fortunate self had a grandmother who bought them all for me to pose onna shelf. My dad said I was to old for "dolls", at this point and barely accepted that these weren't toys, but " collectables" like my beloved early 60s & 70s comics I was buying, and bagging even before there were comic bags..( as far as I knew out in the sticks I grew up in). But as it was his mother buying them for me he couldn't say a whole lot...
Which coming full circle to these new releases , my wife doesn't have the " collector" gene..she just doesn't..She sees it all as frivolous stuff to dust..
Anyway, I calmed her down with " Only the Multiverse figures which are must haves, and the Batman 66 line...
But Megos?? I already got the stare and the "really"???.....
Sooooo, much as I want to, I will not be getting these.....
Shame, as I have such memories of posing, and re- arranging them..had them all up to I think the last wave...the Fantastic Four, Conan, and the like,...
I almost died the day at 16 that I came home from work and my dad had given away my comics, toys, and all the ephemera of my youth to my younger cousins......" who weren't as fortunate as me"...
My dad's gone, but the resentment over my purge remains...
Dr.Langstrom aka Man-Bat

( I can't really blame da wife, she was a trooper during my DC SUPERHEROES, DCUC days, all the way to the Legion Rocket..which I still have the whole collection, so that's why she's sees these new toys as a redo....)

I'm a bit young to have a lot of nostalgia for these. Most of mine comes by way of Robot Chicken and Twisted Toyfare Theater.

I had to jump on these. Obviously way outdated but those Batman and Robin figures are one of my most early memories. Right down to seeing the pink box in the window of a store. Pure magic, at $20 each these were an easy purchase.

I know I had Superman and Batman as a kid, cause I remember Batman's giant mittens.

I also have a very distinct memory of sitting in front of the TV, just absent-mindedly sucking on Superman's head. (I was really little...kids stick stuff in their mouths!)

I remember it so well cause after a while when I pulled the figure out of my mouth, I was horrified to discover that I had sucked all the paint off. No more black hair...Superman's head was entirely flesh-colored! I freaked out and hid the figure in the back of a deep cabinet somewhere cause I was worried I'd get in trouble for some reason.

I should have been more worried about whatever toxic chemicals I'd just consumed. Maybe that Superman hair paint I ate as a child is why I'm so messed up as a human being.

how is the quality of the outfits? they look good in retailer photos but the red son superman that came out like a month ago was a mess. they had the logos at strange angles and out of place. some were sewn into the collar stitching. thomas wayne had issues like that as well.

Growing up in the 70’s Megos were my childhood so I get the nostalgia aspect of these and I do love them as they are. But that said if they are giving us the new body why not do away with the sticker and print the logos onto the costume? Because as a kid the stickers never lasted more than a day of playing.

They are on Amazon and BBTS. I have Batman, Green Lantern and Aquaman coming from Amazon on Dec 9. And I received an email from BBTS saying Batman, Robin, Superman, Aquaman and Green Lantern are processing soon. No word yet on when Green Arriw and Flash will ship though.

I think the beauty of these over the Figures Toy Company versions is the attention to detail to capture the old school attributes of the original Mego figures. It’s almost like 1972 all over again. Bringing back those childhood memories makes me want to “collect them all”. To top it off they’re adding characters Mego never got around to like Flash and Green Lantern.

You are not alone. I did the same thing with the Robin figure. It wasn't until adult hood that I pondered how I never got sick or died from sucking the paint off the head.

Found a lone Superman at my local WM and got him. The nostalgia for the figure and box hit hard and I got him. Don’t think I’ll get any others. Just Superman is enough.

Odd Wonder Woman isn’t one of the 8.

If they make a boxed Conan, I’ll get him. He was easily my favorite Mego.

Looking up the line, they’ve been making other carded ones for a while. Deathstroke is actually kinda neat.

Did your Batman just literally fall apart? That’s what happened to mine. My Grandmother put him back together with elastic. He was floppy as hell, but he was back!

Man, it was a different world back then. Even though we lived quite comfortably, it wasn’t “We’ll just go to the store and get you another one” like it is today. It had nothing to do with cost because they were $1.99 at the time. There just wasn’t that concept of “disposability” back then like there is now. You bought something, you took care of it, and if it broke, you fixed it.

I ordered Batman from BBTS because he was my very first action figure. I’m not sure if I’ll go down the rabbit hole or not. I had no interest whatsoever in in any of the reproductions until now, but these are so incredibly well done.

I’m really intrigued by Green Lantern and Flash. I wanted Mego to make them so bad back in the day. I still don’t understand why they didn’t.

I'll take the Figures Toy Co over these. I NEVER liked those stupid plastic mittens they used. I'll take the colored sleeve and hand thank you.

They look awful, they really do. But back then man they were just the ultimate. I just have so many fond memories of owning Batman, Robin and Spiderman that I couldn't pass these up. Pretty sure I will leave it at the Dynamic duo and they will stay MOC but you never know.....looking forward to these more than I have other toys in quite a while.
