KickStarter: Robot-MA

Tue Jun 21, 2022 6:01 pm

The third of Mr. Lau's li'l wooden fully-articulated robots is up and I'm in yet again. No weapons kit this time as the previous one is compatible, but he's shown off a new set of wings and a skateboard so far.

Thanks for posting — I bowed at the last minute on the last Kickstarter and didn't know this was happening. And this version looks even better. Gonna grab at least two.

The wings look great, too.

In the KS comments he mentions wanting to do animals next, which I'm gonna be all up in the ass of. These li'l bastards are just *nice* toys, imho.

Just trying to convince myself to drop the $65 for one of these little guys.... I know I'll love it.

The Robot-GB is so nice that I backed for 3 MAs and would really like one for each gemstone option.

Same. I backed for three and added three or four two more in the kit. Can’t wait to get these and hope this isn’t really the last of his projects.

I got my MA in a few days ago, but unfortunately he'd been broken across the hips in transit. The hips crossbar assembly is held to the waist assembly by a square key-block in back and a two-pronged 'fork' in front. The bottom and left half of the square broke away and took his legs with it. Per Mr. Lau's advice some Gorilla wood glue fixed him up perfectly nice with only some minor flashes of 'shine' where the clear glue dried. GB was a major advancement over TF in some fundamental points of articulation; but MA improvement over GB is all in subtlety and nuance. I'm so glad I stumbled onto the TF campaign in time to join it, and thus have been able to get the subsequent Robots. I'm saddened this is his last Robot, but I'm intrigued to hear he may get into DIY kits as the assembly stage of these projects is what's wearing him down.

Yeah, I grabbed a couple robots and a pair of wings in this last Kickstarter and they're great. Better than I expected. The boxes they're stored in are even super cool.

The wings, which are really intricate and seemingly fragile, terrify me and I haven't had them outside the container for very long — and getting them back in there was no easy task. They look great, though.

And I can't imagine for a second having to assemble one of theses tiny guys, let alone hundreds.

I got one with a broken head - well, the part that holds the front, right-side of the helmet in place. Also used Gorilla wood glue and then found the splintered parts of the “crown” that broke off so I may try to reattach them but that’ll take tweezers and a magnifying glass. My package also included replacement discs for the top of the head. It’s a surprisingly solid and posable figure and I wouldn’t mind seeing it scaled up slightly especially if that would ease assembly.

For as nice as they are, I would definitely enjoy these more at a larger size.
