Hasbro: Marvel Legends HasLab Engine of Vengeance

  1. Guys, can we hold off on the “stretching thin” comments until the Haslab Fantasticar please? Let’s be smart about this…

  2. Oh geez, Mephisto is an add on? Well played, Haslab! I still won’t buy, but that’s fittingly evil of you to hold that character hostage as part of the campaign.

  3. Gotta love when someone resorts to arguments with “durrrrr” – referring to the masses of people who stated that something was too pricey for them.

  4. Yeah, true, and the articulation is so bad that he can’t even sit in the throne he comes with. I’m using the throne for a different character on my shelf. I actually like the paint and sculpt for the most part, but the hillbilly teeth are a bit distracting.

  5. well over 100. Probably close to what the one from this set will go for anyway, and the select sculpt is pretty rough/outdated.

  6. Maybe they could have cut a few corners to make it less expensive and appeal to more people. Objectively, why do I want so much detail inside a toy car that will be sitting most of its life inside a shelf (if not in its box)
Maybe it will be worth it with all the tier offerings, but don’t think it will unlock all levels.

  7. A Quinjet for $350 seems about right and you could always use it for Joe’s or Valaverse or whatever. For this price point, with stretch goal it’s already two figures (so $50 – $60), Mephistopheles as a stretch goal ($30 – $40 depending on how big and deluxe they make him). Honestly, they would need to throw in another figure (maybe classic OG Ghost Rider) and an updated motorcycle ($50 for the set) and that would still mean you were paying $200 for the car itself. Steep fir a plastic vehicle, but it is what it is. We’ll see what the stretch goals look like, but that would be the only way this even comes close to making any kind of sense to me.

  8. X-Men Danger Room. I think with Marvel you may start looking at playsets/dioramas rather than vehicles. You could do a Punisher Battle Van. I know Punisher has been co-opted by the far right and they may want to stay away from Punisher for a while.

  9. Do you remember those Jakks Pacific Darth Vader and Storm Troopers that were like, 31” and ones even bigger about 48?” I think they came out around the time Force Awakens came out.

They had real minimal articulation but I would take something like that. Make an MCU and a comic one for the next Ant Man movie coming out.

  10. What is the Mephisto Marvel Select going for these days? It’s actually short in stature for Marvel Select and fits perfectly in scale with Marvel Legends. If he is the *only* reason to get this, maybe look at coughing up for the old one.

  11. Easy there, buddy. Slow down, I cited the past history of Marvel Legends figures with vehicles. Maybe not with the specificity you wanted but I’m not just blowing emotional, crybaby smoke here. We’ve had Black Widow, Wolverine, Deadpool, Squirrel Girl, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider, Punisher, Professor X, and Captain America. All for $40-$50 each. And this wasn’t ages ago, either. 2018-2020. The argument is: Your “something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it” maxim falls short when it’s not about just one person buying it, but 9,000. If not enough people were willing to pay for the Rancor, they set the value as “less than $349.99.” Unfortunately, with the Haslab program we can’t just find these guys in the bargain bin later at Ross and TJMaxx. By voting with our buying power, our only options are to pay full price or never get it at all. Which does suck for the die hard Robbie Reyes fans. It truly does. Maybe there could be an adjustment with a sliding scale of increase in backers for a reduction in price. $300 for 12,000 $250 for 14,000, I ain’t the bean counter for Hasbro.

  12. I am partial to a Medusa with crazy- articulated, massive hair and a gigunda (jygunda?) Phoenix firebird.
Those could easily be BAFs or Deluxes though.
Maybe we’ll see entire teams in the Lab in the future.

  13. The giant-ist Giant-Man possible. I also once thought that a Mr. Fantastic with dozens of interchangeable parts would be cool on a smaller scale.

  14. It’s your OPINION that this is not worth $350. I’m sure there’s a Robbie Reyes superfan out there who disagrees with you.

I asked for facts. A lot of collectors who don’t read the news, don’t care to undertsand how the toy business works, and clearly can’t balance their monthly expenses said “durrr the rancor shud be 70 five bucks tops” (or something like that) and this time is no different. Think it should be $300? Show me an argument.

  15. Look, I know this is a bigger vehicle than the figures with motorcycles, scooters, and Xavier’s hoverchair, but this is priced more than all of those that we have gotten so far combined. Price is a fair grievance to have. Is this bigger and better than the Xavier with hoverchair? Maybe, but surely not 7 times better.

  16. Easy pass for me. Only item here I’d kinda want might be the Robbie Reyes figures themselves, but not enough to back the project. Honestly, I don’t know what Marvel projects really demand Haslab campaigns. The Living Tribunal? Celestials? X-Jet? Fantasticar? Star-Lord’s Milano? They can’t do a Helicarrier, the Dark Aster, or Thanos’ Sanctuary in Legends scale unfortunately (to bad Eaglemoss is in trouble or they coulda picked those up). I wonder if Hasbro will consider redoing vehicles from the Secret Wars toyline. Maybe that’s better suited for the retro figure line, but IDK, that may not command enough nostalgia to justify a Haslab. I mean, Rancor failed, which admittedly had insulting stretch goals but was still a confidence-killer. I wish ’em well, but expenses are tough now.

  17. Seems weird to me that this is fifty bucks more than the HISS tank (and about $159 more than I want to pay for a 1/12 muscle car. More power to you all who get it, but I’m gonna have to pass on this on

  18. I’m glad to see stuff like this for Marvel fans but it definitely feels like you are laying up front for the stretch goals that aren’t unlocked yet. They”re not giving anything away for free with this. Every stretch goal will be paid for up front. I’m struggling to even see half of the value of a Galactus or just being $50 shy of the price of the Sentinel. The inflation argument only goes so far. If this was the Blackbird or something else with more universal appeal, then you can do a big price increase and be more likely to have it go over, but a niche version of a niche character? This feels like a potential rancor to me.

  19. I feel like they priced this assuming every stretch goal would be met, which might be a really big mistake/

  20. Will probably be funded, but no way in hell this will be anywhere as successful as the previous two. The value just isn’t there and the selection isn’t nearly as iconic as those two. It’s a cool piece, not a centerpiece.

Compared to Hiss tank, it’s just a generic Charger with effects parts.

Someone random company is going to come out with a generic charger in the same scale for half the price without all the bells and whistles and people can just get that instead.

  21. I meant diversifying and investing in different lines. Stretching thin that way.

And yes, definitely the price jacking will not correspond to increased sales. I totally agree.

  22. “Stretching thin” in terms of a Haslab project like this? Good question. My guess is that Hasbro is happy with that particular division. I personally feel this campaign is a stretch but today has been a good day for them backer wise.

That, all all the price jacking has saved their a**. I’m sure someone will argue with this but just because you make more money doesn’t necessarily mean you’re selling more stuff. Raising the price repeatedly on basic figures will catch up to them eventually, assuming it hasn’t already.

  23. me too! I’ve not read any of the other books with this version of Ghost Rider, but that’s plenty for me, and he looks awesome.

of course, I would like even more an Avengers 1 million BC Ghost-Rider-on-a-Mammoth.

  24. My only real exposure to this Ghost Rider is the current Avengers run (and the Agents of SHIELD show, of course) and those are enough to make me excited to hear what this was going to be. I am a huge fan of Jason Aaron’s run and I like how he is using Robbie.

  25. I’ll just say that the “greed” argument is a little tiring. Of course there’s a level of profit involved, Hasbro has shareholders to answer to. But despite all these price hikes it hasn’t exactly been a banner year for Hasbro financially. Times are tough, this is a very unique (and probably one-time use) prototype, and I’m sure Disney wants a piece too, so the price tag really doesn’t surprise me. I do think that after the Rancor and lightsaber debacles they need to check themselves a bit.

You mention DC and McFarlane. They shove Batman down the throat of fans to the point where you wonder why they bother promoting the other characters. I’m fascinated by the deep dives Hasbro does with Marvel’s catalog of characters and as someone who prefers DC over Marvel, I’m jealous. The fact that this particular version of Ghost Rider is getting better action figure treatment over members of the Justice League is incredible and I think Marvel fans take it for granted.

Lastly, I’ll just say that the “crowdfunding” model is questionable for companies like Hasbro and Mattel but it’s proven effective. It was only a matter of time before big business got in on it. That Early Bird deal worked wonderfully for the HISS Tank, of course they were going to try it again.

  26. In thinking about this before it came out, I had said to myself I would struggle to justify getting this if it was over $199. I might consider doing so if they did a couple of things to win me over, such as making it entirely out of diecast metal and making it so it could be displayed as “always on” where it plugged into an outlet via USBC or sat on a wireless charging pad. It does neither of those. The big kick in the pants here is that if you go to Target, the toy car aisle is filled with diecast cars that are slightly smaller than this for under $50. With the HISS tank, there is nothing to compare it to so that our minds can derive “value” but with this there are a ton of examples. It looks awesome and I am sure many will love it, but without the ability to always on light up, it’s not for me.

  27. Oh dang, if they do a 1:12 mammoth I may have to dip in.
Especially if they HasLab the full team with an enormous Phoenix firebird.

  28. I only want this for the inevitable mephisto that will be a stretch goal. I am debating backing it because having Mephisto in my collections means that much to me. I’d probably flip the rest. It’s just very expensive and I don’t think I can justify the cost in my budget.

  30. I actually checked to see if it was on Comixology Unlimited earlier today. Unfortunately, it’s not but may still pick up sometime soon.

  31. I backed it… I like Robbie Ghost Rider in the current Avengers books, and the car looks cool as …uhh…hell. Obviously we will get Mephisto. I want a 70s style Son of Satan too (not the modern one, who just looks boring.) And I hope for other stuff I don’t actually want that I can then sell and help make back some of the high cost, like I’ve done for other Haslabs. (I pretty much made a profit on my Sentinel!)

  32. If Hasbro is struggling financially why are they diversifying and stretching themselves thin? Will this work out in their favor or keep the prices going up when they are producing plastic consumers may not be too eager to buy? Just questions to ponder…

I would love to get classic renditions of characters from the McFarlane DC Multiverse line. Many of the versions of the characters that the line has been putting out are not appealing to me at all. For instance, I for one am not a fan of the Metal’s versions nor the story itself. They make for “cool” figures but just aren’t my thing.

  33. I wouldn’t even buy this to flip it.

And of course all the “experts” are going to whine about the price. It’s funny how everyone thinks an item should be X dollars but can’t ever explain how to get there.

  34. $350, really? Will it be backed? Sure, but is it worth it? Uhm…no. Dangling tier unlocks of characters that have been on wishlists for a long time (Mephisto, Blackheart, Scarecrow) and may never see another release again is just madness. Greedy greedy greedy. And I thought the repaint of the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider on a retro card was lazy and disappointing…Where’s Dan Ketch? If Hasbro scaled down the Haslab (price point wise) and went with a Dan Ketch version with bike I’m guessing the sales would be through the roof. It’s just baffling to me the prices on figures now and Hasbro just keeps on pushing collectors away. I am one of those who has tremendously scaled back my Legends purchases due to not only prices but the characters and versions thereof being offered. I have since rolled those savings over into my McFarlane purchases and (although the DC Multiverse line is Batman driven and has had a lot of hiccups along the way) I have been extremely impressed by McFarlane’s quality, pace of production and prices among other things. I’m just glad I made my Legends purchases back when Hasbro was on the upswing with the revival of the line. There have been some impressive standouts within the past two years or so, but as a whole the line feels like it’s losing its strength. Maybe it’s just me. And to all of those who are new to collecting Legends or collect the majority of what Hasbro puts out, good for you. Honestly, I know we collectors get ornery but it really is a subjective experience that each person finds their own enjoyment in. Feel free to respond positively or negatively. I can take it.
