SDCC’19 Reactions: Mezco One:12 Collective

Another sweaty July, another San Diego Comic Con, and another deathblow dealt to the ol’ wallet. Let’s get into it.

Mezco Marvel is the big chunk of show this year; generally the One:12 line gets their biggest reveals at Toy Fair, since that show is in their backyard. But there will still some fun stuff to see. Most of the figures were things we saw earlier, and that’s definitely true for Marvel, but let’s focus on the new stuff.

First, we have to talk about Gambit. Actually, there ain’t much to say. He looks fantastic. I can’t wait to get him. Best of the Marvel/DC reveals, and one of my favorites of the show.

That brings us to Morbius, who while cool on his own, begins the journey into more Spiderman universe characters, which is a big deal. But the living vampire here looks great, with a nice mix of classic and a modern reinterpretation. I suspect he is on a slimmer Daredevil-type body, with a great headsculpt. Looking forward to seeing his “wingspan” and what goodies he comes with.

Next up would be Iron Fist, who actually has grown on my since first blush. The head, hand and footwraps, and overall presentation look good (and will probably be a ton of fun to mess around with), but his costume feels like it needs an extra punch. Maybe some cargo pants or the classic sash would do it. But like Morbius, he’s a slimmer guy with what looks like great range.

Sadly, DC doesn’t get any new additions, outside a second Onyx Batman (this time with the symbol and belt in black) but Wonder Woman and Keaton Batman look excellent. We also get our first in-person look at the comic Aquaman, and man…. he’s so close. Great headsculpts, great armor, I hate to say it, but I think he needs to ditch the shorts. I think it’s going to work in person, but right now he feels just a little too Superfriends for his JLA counterparts. I was hoping we would get to see Supreme Knight Batman to round out the trilogy, but looks like I’m gonna have to wait a bit longer.

But the real show-stoppers came from outside the big two. Adding Bluto and another Popeye really kinda hit me out of nowhere, and damn does he look amazing. That pair squaring off on a shelf is going to be a collection all it’s own.

And then you get a certain Cimmerian. In his Frank Frazaetta glory. I have truly lost track of how long I’ve been waiting to see this- Conan was one of the first licenses announced for One:12. But if you are familiar with the property and it’s byzantine licenses, you honestly shouldn’t be surprised it took some time. But sonovagun, they did it. Frazetta Conan. He is going to be amazing, and worth the wait. Plus two.

What else was there? Some sweet Gomez displays (patiently awaiting mine, hopefully next week,) A nice look at Freddy Krueger, John Wick, Hellboy, and some other returning displays, and a Spidey Far From Home exclusive dropped during the show. There was another figure that got sneaky peeked, a mad Titan, but he was quietly stashed away, hopefully to see later. Worst case scenario, we’ll be back to NYCC on October, and again, in their backyard. But they could always just drop outta nowhere, sooner. And hopefully with a Supreme Batman. We’ll see!
