NECA: Reel Toys IT Ultimate Well House Pennywise Review

Ultimate Well House Pennywise

So, just how many Pennywise figures is NECA gonna get me to buy? Well, the answer is, thus far, FOUR, and after seeing the spread at Toy Fair last month, I am in for at least 3 more. And you know what? I love every one of ’em.

That said, this new Ultimate Well House figure creeps me the hell out and I am not quite sure if I want in it my house because I am pretty sure it is going to come to life and kill me. But that notwithstanding, this is another awesome entry in to the already impressive Pennywise collection I have amassed, and with the second installment of the IT movie series coming at the end of the summer, I am still very much hyped. I never thought I would love an iteration of Pennywise as much as Tim Curry, but here is the new version finding a creepy-ass place in my heart, too, so it is win/win for me.

So, for the modern Dancing Clown, I am now up to three figures with this Well House version, along with the standard edition and I *heart* Derry figure that was exclusive to GameStop. As you would expect, all of these figures bring something unique and important to the table. Whereas the standard version is iconic, and the Derry edition brought us (literally) a little piece of Georgie, this version is all about the heads. Yep, you get FOUR unique head sculpts/portraits with this figure and each one is more creepy than the last. These are all pretty scene specific, so I am glad to have these all packaged together because that encounter in the Well House was one of the freakiest parts of the whole movie.

Now, I am going to be putting most of my attention to those new heads for this release as the base body is pretty much the same as the two previous releases, so you should be pretty much familiar with that by now. We do get two sets of standard hands as well (open/splayed as well as grips) and a “demon” right hand to help add to the creepiness of those new heads. These are all nice touches, and with the relatively high level of effort that goes into producing multiple heads in a release (not to mention the cost), they almost feel like bonuses, so I will take them.

As I said, though, the heads make this set and if you cannot find one you like/creep you the hell out, well, then, I don’t really have anything for you. Most of them capture a specific moment from the well house sequence (hence the name of the figure), but to start, I was very pleased to see that they included the “wig” head from the photo slide scene in Bill’s garage. I don’t know… there is something particularly unsettling about that part and it just made Pennywise even more scary. This might be my favorite head from the set, or at least tied at the top with the “stabbed” version.

Speaking of, that head is wonderfully horrific on multiple levels, and the fact that the iron bar is a separate piece makes it even better. NECA is, of course, known for their sculpting details, and the horrific expression and shape of this head are both very effective, and I love that the engineering allows for the iron bar to pass through the entry and exit wounds, and is thus, adjustable, to pose the bar at any stage of stabbing you like. It is fun, kids!

The other two heads are what I call scary smile, and “I am going to eat your face”, and it is like one progression to the next as Pennywise continues to torment the Losers individually as they experience their nightmares in the well house. Throughout that entire sequence, the expressions and eyes get more and more twisted and demonic, so if any head in this set can be considered a “standard” version is is the creepy smile version that captures that look right before the eyes start going in different directions.

The “I am going to eat your face” head stands to be featured in a lot of intense close-up pictures because it is by far the most threatening of the four heads. Where are the 1990 version of Pennywise relied mostly on psychological torment to be scary, this version is not afraid to manifest itself in horrific visual fashion, and this head is a good representation of that. At the same time, if I had to pick, this would probably be my least favorite of the included portraits, but I cannot really give a good reason why. I suppose it is more about the strength of the other three rather than this one being weak (because it most certainly is NOT), but variety is what makes this release so successful, so you will be forced to choose which head to display, be forced to rotate them, or resign yourself to the idea of getting four of these figures.

NECA continues to crush it with these Pennywise figures, and with the second part of the IT movie coming later this year, I think and hope we will continue to see more versions of this prototypical scary clown. We won’t have to wait long though, because the “Dancing Clown” version will be coming soon, and you better believe I already have that one on pre-order. In the meantime, head to Dorkside Toys to nab this version, you won’t regret it.
