Hasbro: Star Wars Black Series Mace Windu

Today we are going to wrap up our look at the latest Black Series wave with Jedi Master Mace Windu. I own the Figuarts Mace Windu, so I wasn’t sure I needed this one, but it looked great in promotional shots so I had to pick it up. Let’s take a look at Mace Windu!

Mace comes in the standard packaging and includes a lightsaber with removeable hilt and removeable soft goods cloak.

The saber has good detail and is well painted with a few different colors including a nice metallic gold and silver. The blade is removeable, but the saber doesn’t hang on Mace’s belt.

The cloak is fairly soft and hangs on the body somewhat stiffly, but it’s pretty good for factory soft goods. Where it doesn’t quite work for me is the hood. It’s sewn down to the shoulders to hold it in place over the head, but it doesn’t really go far enough down over the head for my taste.

I tried wetting it to reshape the look, but I wasn’t entirely successful.

I think the figure looks best without the cloak because you can see the well sculpted Jedi robes a lot better. I love the subtle texture in all the robes and Mace looks powerfully built.

The articulation is the usual Black Series with a twist. Mace has:

  • Ball and socket lower neck, head, and mid-torso
  • Swivel/hinge shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips and ankles
  • Double hinged knees
  • Swivel thigh
  • Butterfly hinged shoulders

The butterfly hinge helps Mace reach across his body and hold his saber in both hands better. It does bend the outer robe a little bit, but it works well. The bottom robe is split on the sides and down the middle and allows for full leg movement. The only downside for the movement for me is his head is a little loose.

The paint is pretty minimal, but sharp where applied on the belt. The face printing is particularly good with this figure, probably one of the best versions of it I’ve seen. The sculpted robe color is a little light and it actually reminds me a little more of the Episode I preview figure.

It’s completely unfair to compare this figure to the far pricier Figuarts Mace Windu, but I’m going to anyway. The Hasbro figure actually compares pretty favorably to the Figuarts.

It has a lot of the same movement and I think I like the Hasbro head sculpt a little more than either Figuarts head. I do miss the extra hands. A force push hand would have put this figure over the top for me.

It’s a little funny that Hasbro released two ’90s era Sam Jackson figures so close together and while I like both, I think this one works a little better.
