Bandai: Figure-rise Dragon Ball Super Saiyan Son Goku and Frieza Plastic Models

Figure-rise Standard - Dragon Ball Super Saiyan Son Goku Plastic Model Featured

By now everyone knows that I’m a complete sucker for the Bandai Star Wars model kits. Fun to build, great action figures. But now I stumble across these Dragon Ball kits and I’m thinking, gah, I need more shelves.

And to tell the truth, I’m not a huge Dragon Ball nut. These models just look so great, both build-wise and the finished product, that I can’t pass them up.

First off, the negative. I can’t seem to find a scale for these. I did find listings on Amazon for a Figurise Super Saiyajin Son Goku Master Grade Model Kit and a Dragon Ball Kai Master Grade FIGURERISE: Son Goku 1/8 Scale Plastic Model Kit, both 1:8 scale. But the models currently being solicited are listed as Standard, not Master Grade. I’m not as well-versed in the import model game yet to know if that makes a difference in scale, but the pre-order price of $16-$19 is more in line the 1:12 scale Star Wars line. But that is just assumption on my end, mixed with a little hope that these are close to 6-inch.

Another difference is in the articulation layout. If you click the Amazon links above you’ll see that the articulation is exposed and kind of ugly. It probably moves better than 75% of my collection but it sticks out like a sore thumb. The seam lines of the separate parts are also in very noticeable spots. These new models put the seams around muscle placement and wrinkles lines in the clothing. Yes, you can still see the seams, but it isn’t as jarring when it’s in the natural recesses.

Going a step further, even the eyes are separate pieces, and in Goku’s case, the eyebrows. This is a genius way to avoid having to use decals or paint, but it does lock the final piece into just one look. Less options for the builder. So, it’s a toss up here. I like eyes with some subtle expression, looking to the side or up or down slightly, but I’m also impressed at the ingenuity and engineering here. I’m as much of a fan of the build as I am of the toy when it comes to these kits.

Each kit comes with nice accessories. Extra hands and faces along with power effects and even stands for the effects. I’m not sure how easy it will be switching the faces themselves, what with all the inner workings of the eyes and such.

Pre-orders are up now on Amiami. Frieza is a little under $17 and Goku is almost $20. Both are set to release July 30th.
