Toy Fair 2016 Reactions: DC Collectibles Icons

Over the past couple of months the first two waves of the new DC Collectibles Icons line have really made me a fan. The awesome sculpts, crisp paints, and high level articulation have all contributed to sucking me in to be all-in on this line. So with Toy Fair approaching, I was pumped to see what DC Collectibles had in store to show off at the annual event. I was hoping to see at least two waves so I would know that the line had a strong future. Well toy fair has come and gone and I was definitely not disappointed with their showing.

They showed off a nice mix of figures, both basic and their deluxe options. The first figure that made me go wow was Batgirl.

Wowzers. I didn’t even think I ever needed her “Batgirl of Burnside” outfit. That is until I saw this figure. Now I need it, like, yesterday. The bike is an awesome accessory. According to some other sites that went to the DCC both and talked to the line’s managers, the bike does come off its base and it functions. She also comes with some open gripping hands to allow her to hold on to the bike’s handles, along with an alternate wind-blown hair alternate head. She carries a hefty sixty bucks price tag, and as great as she looks and as awesome as the accessories are, I still think that’s a bit steep. But no way am I passing on her.

The other big wow for me was Wonder Woman. I knew it was just a matter of “when” not “if” that we would get a Wonder Woman for Icons, and I’m glad it’s sooner rather than later. She’s in her new, more armored-up design that Jason Fabok cooked up. It’s a cool look and with Wonder Woman, you just know that they’ll be more versions of her coming soon.  The accessories are well made too, and I love the shield she comes with.

Cyborg is another figure that really impressed me. There are some seriously well-crafted, sculpted details on his armor. I also love that almost all the articulation is hidden inside that pretty armor sculpt. It’s clearly his new armor from the “Forever Evil” story line, which is much more streamlined than his original almost clunky-looking armor.

Cyborg was the other figure they showed not only as a single, but  also as part of the Justice League 7-pack. That raises an interesting conundrum: Do folks buy the single releases or hold off for the 7-pack?  I don’t know if I’ll be able to hold off on the Wonder Woman, but I could resist Cyborg enough to hold out for the 7-pack. I think.

Speaking of “Evil,” the definite biggest reveal of Toy Fair from the Icons line was Darkseid. He’ll be a massive 12 inches tall and will come with his daughter, Grail. He looks cool, and Grail looks amazing, but I don’t really dig that New 52 design, and I don’t like Darkseid being that big. So as good as he looks I may have to pass.  But I have to have that Grail figure. Her head sculpt is insane.

The New 52 definitely had a strong presence, but they did show off a very classic and awesome-looking Deathstroke.  He’s modeled after his “Judas Contract” look, which for Deathstroke is as classic as it gets. He’s a must have. The weapons are spot-on, and the extra hands to ensure he can hold all the weapons correctly is a great touch.

The one figure reveal that left me a bit flat was Swamp Thing. I don’t think he looked bad, but I he seems a bit thin and a little less “swampy” than I’d like. Definitely on the fence about him. What’s the deal with companies not being able to get this guy right?

Also shown were two different accessory packs. They look to range from extra weapons and effects of existing figures to props, background pieces for displays, to even actual characters. Or maybe some are teasers of upcoming figures? Here’s to hoping!

As I mentioned earlier, they revealed a 7-pack consisting of the entire core members of the New 52 Justice League. It’s a cool set with new sculpts of Flash, Batman, Aquaman, and Superman. Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg look to be straight re-releases. It’s definitely nice to see someone be able to land the Justice League all at once, but the straight re-releases so soon after their original release is a bit of a head scratcher. On the plus side, the new Bats looks to be really nice. The first Batman in the line was a bit short, and from the looks of this figure, they appear to have fixed that issue.

Besides the brand new stuff, they also showed the previously teased Wave 4 figures: Joker, Static Shock, John Stewart Green Lantern, and Firestorm all look great. I really didn’t think I was going to be all-in on this line, but these figures are too good looking to pass up for me.

It was definitely a good showing for what I wanted to see from the line. I can’t wait for wave 3 to hit soon, and wave 4 looks outstanding as well.

In case anyone missed it, besides the awesome Icons stuff, DC Collectibles revealed this little beauty:

DC Collectibles Animated Batwing

Look at that blazer! How do I get my hands on that coat?! Oh yeah, I guess that 1/12 scale Bat-wing is cool, but, man, what a sense of fashion DC Collectibles VP of creative services Kevin Kiniry has!

  1. It’s been a year since this was posted, what is the over under that the batman in the JLA pack is actually a decent size? Same with Supes? Also, does anyone plan on getting the Deluxe Cyborg, Amazo virus WW AND the JLA set? It’s hard for me to justify getting both and the JLA set is a no brainer. I love this line!

  2. That’s certainly possible, and it doesn’t make the 7-pack particularly appealing for me personally. I like my accessories.:) Still a good pack if the price reflects the lack of acccessories, which it should.

I guess it depends howseriously they take the Harley Quinn part of the Harley Quinn Designer Line lol. I’d prefer one is Icons as well though as it doesn’t scale with the Designer Series’.

  3. The display at the Toy Fair booth didn’t show any accessories for the 7 pack figures, and the current 7 pack in the 6.75 inch line has no accessories, I think it’s just the figures straight up.

They’re doing a DC Designer series Amanda Connor Harley Quinn line, and they have Harley in her superhero outfit from the mini series with Power Girl, so it’s possible they could do a Pee Gee.

  4. They’ve definitely fixed the scale. While that Batman measured up to exactly 6 inches at the ears, the figures of Wave 2 are much taller (Flash and Green Lantern are both over 6 inches tall). However, they still aren’t entirely in scale with ML or DCUC – while both of those lines are 6.5-inch scale, DC Icons is true 6-inch, so they’ll still end up being a tad short in comparison to those lines.

  5. No he’s not. Last rites was the story that lead into battle for the cowl. The batman in this story was Bruce Wayne. Also notice the belt and gauntlets that the figure is wearing, both different than dick’s as batman

  6. People still think the Batman is out of scale? They all should know by now that the first wave Batman was Dick Grayson (spoiler!!) not Bruce Wayne. The scale is correct. The 7-pack Batman will be taller because it is Bruce.

  7. If you break it down that works to over $2 per item. That’s a lot to pay per arrow or Batarang.

  8. I bought the BATMAN from the first wave and was very much pleased with the articulation, but disappointed with his scale compared to my other 6 inch figures. It was like he was in Junior Varsity going against NFL pro leaguers.?

  9. I am super excited for Swamp Thing because it is based on his first appearance (well, as Alec). The only thing DC needs to change on him is to paint the branches.

I’ve got nothing against Darkseid’s design, I just don’t like his size. This figure is just too tall and would have been better around 9 inches if nothing else.

  10. Oh? Well good lol, I was thinking the figures were 25usd for some reason, wondering why the Harley Quinn line was priced at 28.

  11. The price for the accessory packs is the same as the figures – the figures have gone up to $28.

  12. As I said in the other post about Icons, my enthusiasm for the line has gone up a LOT with this Toy Fair. They nearly doubled the proportion of female figures in the line, they rectified the huge error of not having Wonder Woman (and a magnificent Wonder Woman at that), and they gave us an AMAZING Batgirl with her bike, something I never thought to get.
Also for people worried about the price point for Batgirl, check out some of the videos from Toy Fair that show the figures, its a BIG bike and very detailed and cool, definitely worth as much as a second figure with all that tooling and plastic.

I really want to know more about tht 7-pack. If it comes with all the accessories the individual figures came with then I might as well wait to get it and just pick up some of the existing, non-7 pack figures while I wait. If it skimps on accessories to lower the overall price point then I think I’d rather just get Batman, Superman, Flash and Cyborg separately.

I do like the accessory packs (do one with Dex-Starr please DCC), and they do contain trophy racks to hold all the accessories which adds to the value and aren’t pictured, but I do think it would have been better if they could have kept the prices the same as the figures or even a little less.

I wonder how the BTAS Batwing would go with the Icons series figures hehe.

I just hope DC gives us an Elegy Batwoman and Black Canary and the like before too long. Oh and Hawkgirl.
