Top Ten: Star Wars The Force Awakens Black Series

Headline%20TFA%20Top%20TenHasbro produced quite a few 6-inch scale Black Series figures of characters from The Force Awakens ahead of the film’s release. This group includes main characters, troopers, blink-and-you-miss-them characters and even a guy who didn’t make the final cut. It looks like Hasbro is moving away from waves that focus solely on The Force Awakens for the first two waves this year, and I’m pleased about that. A quick glance at my TFA shelf gives me the impression that TFA is the most well-represented segment of Star Wars in the 6-inch scale currently. Still, after watching the movie a few times, there are a few characters I would like to add to the shelf eventually, including a couple main characters, some minor characters and some background filler.

Runners%20upI’m hoping Hasbro is going to get to some more demanded Original Trilogy characters like Lando and prequel guys like Dooku, but eventually they will sprinkle in more characters from The Force Awakens, so I’ve been thinking about who I want most. I’m going to go from my least wanted to most wanted here, but first a few runners up:

  • Jessica Pava: She is one of the pilots at the end battle. I’ll be honest and say I’m including her just because she is a female X-wing pilot and I think that’s cool, and I’d like to build a squad with Poe and Asty.
  • Resistance outfit Rey, snow gear Han Solo, General Hux indoor gear, and Unmasked Kylo Ren: I like variants in Star Wars figures, just not as much as unique characters.
  • Unkar Plutt: He has a pivotal role in the movie, but I really don’t care for the design at all.
  • Teedo and Luggabeast: More of a deluxe pack, but I really love the design on these two.
  • Supreme Leader Snoke: Again, a pivotal role, but not my favorite design. Maybe it would be better to get this guy after we actually see him in person.
  • Bazine Netal: I just like her evil harlequin look.

grummgar

10. Grummgar

Often referred to online as a “fat Bossk,” his resemblance to a giant, malformed Trandoshan is probably part of the appeal to me. He appears in Disney Infinity as a non-playable character and looks great running around. I like the idea of a character this large joining the line. He could be a fun toy.

snap-wexley9. Snap Wexley

Temmin “Snap” Wexley is a resistance reconnaissance pilot who has a few lines in the movie and actually survives. He’d go great with our pilots Asty and Dameron. I also like that he’s a main character from one of the new canon of novels, Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath.

Ithano8. Captain Sidon Ithano

Out of all the creatures in Maz Kanata’s castle, this is the design that most appeals to me. He appears briefly in the film when Finn is trying to get a ride off the planet to run from the First Order. According to some supplementary material, Ithano also goes by the name of “Crimson Corsair” and he’s a space pirate. I just like the look and think he’d make a fun figure.

Ackbar7. Admiral Ackbar

Though I would prefer his Original Trilogy look, I’d love to see Ackbar in the 6-inch scale. The Mon Cal aliens are one of my favorite Star Wars designs.

tasu-leech6. Tasu Leech

“Tasu Leech! Good to see you.” This guy looks like he would fit in perfectly at Jabba’s Palace, and I love the standoff between Han, the Guavians, and Kanjiklub. It harkens back to A New Hope with Han’s dealings with Greedo and Jabba in a fun way. I want him because he’s the leader of Kanjiklub, but I also really like the look of the actor who plays him.

Bala-Tik5. Bala-Tik

Just like Tasu Leech, the mouthpiece for the Guavian Death Gang made an impression on me and my family. His line, “Tell that to Kanjiklub!” is one of the more quoted TFA lines around our house. Besides, we already have the Enforcers. He’s another one where I just dig the costume. His padded armor probably has one of the more prequel feeling designs, but I like it.

star-wars-cast-luke-skywalker4. Luke Skywalker

But he wasn’t in the movie at all! Yeah, true, but he looked so damn cool in his brief appearance that I immediately wanted a figure. The costume is basically an inversion of his Return of the Jedi look, and I have to think he’ll feature more prominently in the next movie looking very much the same.

Nien-Nunb3. Nien-Nunb

Like Ackbar and the Mon Cal, I love the Sullustan design in general and Nien Nunb specifically in Return of the Jedi. That laugh! This one is a bit of a cheat because he looks almost the same in TFA as he does in ROTJ. All they need to do is add a removable helmet and he can either sit with the eventual General Calrissian figure or with Poe Dameron’s squadron.

General%20Organa2. General Leia Organna

Now, we’ve seen a ceremonial Leia figure in a recent Hasbro motion poster, but I’m looking for the “classy gas station attendant” look with the vest and sensible slacks. It very much recalls Leia’s outfit under the poncho in ROTJ and the vest makes me think of the Tantive IV defenders at the beginning of A New Hope. It’s her look throughout most of the film, so it’s a must for me.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) Ph: Film Frame © 2014 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Right Reserved..

1. Maz Kanata

I found Maz immediately charming, from the way she dressed-down Solo and Finn to her mischievous comments about her “boyfriend” Chewbacca. The character is interesting to me as sort of a Star Wars equivalent to Rick from Casablanca and her castle is an intergalactic Rick’s Café Americain where all sorts of shady and upstanding types can go for rest and relaxation. The supplemental material indicates that she feels and can use the Force, but is not a Jedi or Sith, and she used her powers to make her way as a pirate. I like the exploration of non-jedi using the Force, and there’s something absurd and so very Star Wars about a tiny little tangerine-headed old lady space pirate queen. We have seen a Maz figure on that motion poster and I’m not sure it’s a 6-inch scale figure, but I hope so.

Well, that’s my list, what’s yours? Or are you done with The Force Awakens for now? I think we are going to get a bit of a break from The Force Awakens in the black series for a bit and that’s fine with me, but I’d like to see some of these guys sprinkled into the line as it hopefully continues for many years to come.

  1. Yes me to Roth12 the prequel may have suck to a lot of fans , with the director “George L#cu$$” at the helm but the character and figures were some of the coolest make more of the different Jedi , Doku , Mace windu , and more !!

  2. Who care about these least know figure that no one will buy you have a million more that are popular that people will kill for from the older movies and prequel !!

  3. >Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke, and Han
    >background characters

You, uh. You haven’t actually watched the movies, have you?

  4. Well said, boss! I’m partial to (3)and(4),but your post is most eloquent. Or this being a site for action figures should I say”articulate”??haw-lol. Nyuknyuk!
    ?Shalom.

  5. (1) Two words: KYLE KATARN.

    (2) A ROTJ Boba Fett figure is a must, with repositioned pouches to allow for better articulation.

    (3) Captain Rex, Commander Wolffe and Gregor (primarily from Rebels would be my interest, but I would settle for their younger selves), but otherwise other clone commanders and clone troopers – with removable helmets.

    (4) More female characters; and a greater commitment to a consistent scale with female characters.

    (5) Delta Squad?

Other than that, I’d like to see some figures from Marvel’s more recent comic efforts – such as the Wookie bounty hunter, Black Krrsantan.

  6. Yup. It’s certainly not healthy raising boys on entertainment products devoid of realistic girls and women, for one example, I mean how mant self professed geek guys also talk about having trouble talking to and relating to women? It helps if you’ve been taught to see women as people lol.
I am a fan of Janelle Monae, she is amazing.:)

  7. It’s times like these that I’m reminded of the oriental philosophy of the Jedi. We are all one living in a symbiant circle. What happens to one affects the other. Kenobi was talking about the Naboo and the Gungans in ep1,but it also applies to Black, White, Latin, Asian, Greeks, Jewish, Wicca, Islam, Christian, children, etc all humankind matters. None of us should be ignored.
RFG,Are you a fan of Janelle Monaé? I love her.
I think you would too,if you don’t already. I think the two of you have the same woman warrior spirit.
    ?Shalom.

  8. If I may interject, the current status quo that is ever evolving is historically sexist as well as racist.? it’s the proverbial 1000 lbs “elephant in the room” that most ignore. The business logic behind Disney acquiring MARVEL and Star Wars was to corner the male demographic.
Obviously the Disney Princesses that is their bread & butter has had the family and female demographic well in hand for decades. Now they have it all. Granted there is a margin of crossover. Your son and I have something in common. Yet that margin is small. The majority marketing is under traditional gender roles. Antiquated, outdated, and outmoded roles. Why are there boy’s toys and girl’s toys??
Why is the girl’s side in toysrus largely pink? Why is there even a girl’s side segregated from the boy’s side to begin with in 2016AD??
It blatantly stares me in the face whenever I go toy hunting.
    Girls play with dolls.”
    Boys have action figures.”
    Girls create.(Cook,homemaker)
    Boys destroy! (Warriors)
    The marketing is sexist.
    However…
Target is leading the charge for change by eliminating this ancient practice of assigning aisles by gender.

As for the art of storytelling in American sci-fi,fantasy,comic book culture; Every hero’s standard is to fight the good fight and right the wrongs of the evil of tyranny and oppression. Equality, liberty and justice for everyone is the hero’s goal. The morality of SW upholds these ideas. The OT heroes are males and females of various “races” fighting the evil oppressive empire. An EMPIRE that Lucas modeled after some of human history’s most egregious regimes. Parties that didn’t believe everyone was equal. Ever notice there are NO women in the OT empire? That’s because there were none in that party in Europe that wore black, red and white colors and brandished the inverted swastika as their standard. An in-story element written to illustrate the evil essence of the characters then.

The comics, cartoons added female Sith Lords, and currently a captain in ep7.

Fantastic as SW is have you ever noticed the lack of people of color in the OT??
The cantina scene is so wonderfully richly intergalactically diverse, yet outside of that the OT is whiter than a polar bear in a snowstorm.
    Yes,Lando.
The SW Family Guy special makes an uncomfortable reference to Lando being the only black guy in the universe.

Of course, the PT improved upon this by adding several human persons of color.
The imperial clone army,Boba, and Jango Fett by extension.
I confess after watching ep7,the only initial positive element that lingered with me was the diversity of the cast.
They checked all the boxes: Latin(Poe), Black(Finn), and a woman(Rey).?
It’s a win for all. I’ll take that victory for the “elephant”.
    Peace be unto you.
    ?Shalom!

  9. You mean like Zuvio, Obi Wan Kenobi, Luke, Greedo and Han lol? W get plent of background male characters, but its funny when someone proposes background female characters its “ohh they won’t sell”. It’s BS.

  10. I agree with all these figures both big and small! Some guys I would like to see are:
Robo Arms Guy from Nima outpost
Red stilt droid from Maz’s Castle
    R2-KT
    Mummified guy who attacks Rey
Blue guy and Carrie Fisher Daughter s from the Rebel Base
    Kanjiklubbers

Not everyone’s main choices but a man can dream! If someone could tell me the actual names of these guys, I don’t have the visual dictionary to hand and Wookiepedia is a nightmare!

  11. Most of those would pegwarm horribly. Pava might do ok. but PZ is clogging the pegs at the smaller scale and the others won’t do any better. Leia, Maz, Rey are the ones who will sell, so they are the ones Hasbro will produce.

Luke is one of the big three, a fan favorite, and the whole crux of TFA. He got second billing, even with the limited role. They will make a figure of him before a random officer- even if it has a vagina, which seems to be your only concern.

  12. Lol. First off they lied, there was no reason to hold off 12″ Jakku Rey, or not put Jakku Rey in the Falcon set and 12″ 5 pack because of spoilers. Second boys can go **** themselves, the fact that marketing has shamelessly pandered to you for decades is not a justification of anything. Sexist marketing is still sexist. Finally, its also bad business to ignore 75% of the population when it comes to your fictional setting, which is precisely why Disney is focusing on being more exclusive.

  13. @MATT K
Excellent use of Topps cards! Brilliant.?
“Bazine Netal: I just like her evil harlequin look.” lol yeah..wait,what??
Uh,…hmmm isn’t Harley Quinn already evil? Like she is a super villain, right, boss? I mean did you see that suicide squad trailer? (Whoa!)

Tell it to Kanjiclub!” LoL ?the sci-fi Culture Club Klingons?!!
Tasu Leech isn’t a proto Klingon?
C’mon. Nobody else sees it? JJ is playing a little joke on us because of his involvement with both major “Star” franchises! Lmao…
    ?Shalom.

  14. Yes,Dare! DARE! Lol?
Well said. I agree. More prequel guys:Capt.Typho and Panaka please.Taun Wee,Ayala Secura, Commander Gree, CLONE pilots, Capt Rex, Kiadi Mundi, Luminara Unduli, Stass Allie, Shak Ti, Kit Fisto, Mace Windu, Padme, Queen Amidala, Senate Guards, Jedi Temple Guards, Kamino Boba Fett, General Jarjar, BossNass, and my golden fleece/el Eldorado/holy grail; ep2 Yoda(which I hope SHF makes first!) oh my!
    ?Shalom!

  15. I’ve read a lot of your posts and you always cry sexist Hasbro. First off they have stated they were told to hold off on too much Rey merchandise to avoid spoilers. Secondly, Star Wars has always been marketed towards boys and most purchasers are boys. This is not sexist it is marketing. They marker most of their books at 10-12 year olds, that’s frustrating to me. And my son loves a lot of Disney princess movies, they have no toys in the “boy” aisles. Hasbro is not discriminating against women or labeling toys boy only. Star Wars is a fictional universe and doesn’t have to adhere to US culture so it is up to the creator to decide gender ratios of main characters.

  16. I’m only doing the “Resistance Base tarmac” in the 6″, so I’m totally down with:
    Jess
    Snap
    Nein Nunb
    PZ-4CO
maybe a Goss Toowers (why not?)

I REALLY want to see a Ban Dai kit for the R0 droids too.

  17. they will. Episode VII just came out so Hasbro was just taking advantage of the hype. The next two waves are already transitioning back to other eras of Star Wars.

  18. These are all great choices. Of the little figures, my most anticipated is the two pack that includes Ithano. Pretty much all the denizens of Maz’s place are great figure fodder.

  19. What scale do you prefer to see and how many points of articulation do you want them to have?

  20. So why don’t they focus on all scale and articulation at the same time? What would be fair. Is it they can’t afford to make the figures that fans and collectors wish to have?

  21. Hasbro have a Leia and Maz on the way.
They showed them in a TFA poster made up of figures.

I think the black Series needs to go back to focusing on all 7 films.
It will soon be a line of Episode 7 figures with some other characters scattered in!

  22. There’s no way Luke should be over someone like Pava who actually had lines and a role in the movie lol. We know Maz Kanata and Leia are getting figures and its almost certain Resistance Rey will too, so:

    1. Jessika Pava
    2. Bazine Netal
    3. Unamo
    4. Keydel Ko Connix
    5. Korr Sella
    6. Pamich Nerro
    7. Female Resistance Trooper
    8. Female FO officer
    9. Kalonia
    10. PZ.4C0

Help redress the terrible gender ratio, and these characters are worth getting just as much as some random boring male character no one who hasn’t read the books knows anything about.

  23. I would absolutely love to get PZ4CO and fish-faced Brigette Helm. Who doesn’t love cool droids? And I think these are two of the cooler droids in the series.

  24. I know, I typically don’t like to mix painted faces and plastic, but my guess is Hasbro won’t make an unhelmeted Kylo.

We know Maz and Leia have to come at some point. My guess is we’ll get a lot more info at Toy Fair in February. Sabine and Revan are also confirmed but not sure when they’re coming.

  25. It depends on Figuarts release schedule. Hasbro too. No word after the February/March wave until C3PO in the fall. That Kylo head looked pretty good but he’ll have a painted face vs my collection of all black series flesh plastic.

  26. Definitely. It looks like Figuarts is going to beat Hasbro to a lot of the Prequel characters. And I bet Figuarts’ battle droids are going to be lot sturdier than anything Hasbro makes.

Speaking of unmasked Kylo, see my post above.

  27. Besides Luke and unmasked Kylo, I can wait for more fore awakens. I want more (dare I say it) prequels. We only have Maul from episode 1. Only phase 1 clones from episode 2 (and Jango). We need Grievous, Qui Gon and Obi from episode 1, and some jedi, Dooku, and battledroids.

  28. @arnoldcorso:disqus Could you tell me where to get that unmasked Kylo Ren head that you mentioned? I’ve been looking for one, and I can’t find one anywhere online! I’d really appreciate it.

  29. @arnoldcorso:disqus Can you tell me where to get that unmasked Kylo Ren head that you mentioned? I’ve been looking for one, and I can’t find one anywhere online! I’d really appreciate it.

  30. Some thoughts:

    – I don’t see how we don’t get a 6” Leia and Maz figure. We’ve gotten all the other major characters. I suspect with Maz the reason we don’t have her yet is that the final design was finalized so late (it was finalized in October 2014, one of the last major designs finalized).

    – Unmasked Kylo Ren – there’s a seller from Thailand selling excellent unmasked Kylo Ren heads that you can put on your 6” Kylo Ren. I’d almost rather just get that than whatever Hasbro makes, which I’m sure won’t look as good.

    – Nien Nunb and Ackbar are musts, but I’d much rather have them from ROTJ, and would be kind of surprised if we didn’t get them by late 2017.

    – Luke and Snoke will probably come in the Episode VIII line, which makes more sense. I’d prefer to get the figures when we actually see the characters do something.

Overall though I don’t want Hasbro to go too crazy with this line. I like the idea of TBS being a limited line. I’d much rather a focus on quality rather than quantity. The 3.75” scale is where Hasbro should be putting out background figures like Grummgar.
